Patriots Continue Domination in Series Sweep over Pikeville

Williamsburg, KY – Cumberlands Baseball continued to show off their offensive arsenal on Friday in the conclusion of a three-game Mid-South Conference series with the Bears of the University of Pikeville. Scoring in each of the first six innings of work, the Patriots would put away the Bears in another run-rule shortened game, taking a 14-1 win over Pikeville and securing the series sweep. The victory improves UC to 38-5 overall on the year and 10-2 in MSC play.

Colton Easterwood would be handed the ball to start the game for the Patriots as he delivered a gem of a start for UC while his team gave him a plethora of support throughout the contest. Opening up scoring early, a leadoff walk to Pedro Nazario saw him advance all the way to third after a stolen base and a wild throwing error on the UPike catcher. A quick groundout from Orley Arellano would bring in Nazario, giving UC a 1-0 lead. The Bears would tie the game up in the second with two down as Easterwood would allow two on via a walk and a hit-by-pitch. A throwing error on Nazario resulted in the tying run to come home, making it 1-1. In the bottom of the inning, an RBI double from J.C. Santos would drive in Britton Elmore, who was courtesy running for Robbie Stroub who reached via fielder's choice earlier in the inning, to retake the lead for UC 2-1.

Manufacturing runs in the third is the exact definition of the offense that UC put together in the inning. Scoring one run on a throwing error while two others scored via groundouts extended the lead to 5-1 Patriots after three. In the fourth, an RBI single from Nazario followed by an RBI sacrifice fly from Arellano pushed the Patriots out front 7-1.

In the fifth, Bryan Benz would tape measure a solo home run over the left field fence on a laser shot for his 11th long ball of the season and for the third consecutive day to widen the gap again to 8-1. Cumberlands would then pile on the run support in the sixth. An RBI sacrifice fly by Arellano would score a run to make it 9-1. Bryan Leef would then join the long ball party with a two-run shot deep over the left field fence for his team leading 15th home run of the season to make it 11-1 Patriots. Robbie Stroub would cap off the day offensively with a three-run blast for his eighth home run of the year, giving UC the 14-1 margin of victory.

Easterwood would get the complete game win tossing seven innings allowing one unearned run on six hits and a walk while sitting eight down on strikes.

Cumberlands returns to action at Doyle Buhl Stadium on Tuesday, April 16th as they host Milligan College for a non-conference matchup. First pitch is set for 5 pm.
