Williamsburg, KY – The top-seed University of the Cumberlands plated runs in six out of eight innings coupled with a strong pitching performance took a 10-1 win over Mobile in the NAIA Opening Round Williamsburg Bracket Monday night. With the win, the Patriots improve to 45-8, while the Rams move to 37-21.
Cumberlands jumped out to a 1-0 lead as
Raudy Martinez singles through the left side and advanced to second on a stolen base.
Bryan Leef followed with an infield singles, scoring Martinez on a wild throw to give UC a 1-0 lead.
Bryan Benz led off the bottom of the second inning with a standup double. A walk and a single loaded the bases with one out for the Patriots as
Pedro Nazario tallied a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Benz to extend Cumberlands lead to 2-0.
The Patriots extended their lead in bottom of the third inning as Leef singled and took second base on a steal.
Jose Rojas followed with an RBI single through the left side scoring Leef. Three batters later Rojas would score on a
J.C. Santos RBI single to give Cumberlands a 4-0 advantage.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Blake Carnley led off the top of the fifth inning with a triple to center field to get things going for Mobile. Carnley would later score on a Christian Poche RBI groundout to make the score 4-1. Cumberlands responded in the bottom half of the inning with Leef leading off with a single and notched his third stolen base of the game to advance to second. Rojas followed with an RBI double and later score on a Santos sacrifice fly to extend Cumberlands lead to 6-1.
Cumberlands extended their lead with a run in sixth inning to make it 7-1. Martinez hit a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second on a stolen base. Rojas followed with an RBI double to center plating Martinez.
The Patriots rallied with two outs in the eighth inning as Rojas drew a four-pitch walk followed by a Benz single.
Robbie Stroub cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left field to extend UC's lead to 10-1.
Zach Hurley goes the distance scattering four hits, one run, and nine strikeouts for his fifth complete game of the season. Hurley improves to 8-2 on the season. Leef, Martinez, Rojas, and Stroub notched three hits apiece.
Bailey Bannon takes the loss allowing four runs on nine hits in three innings. Zach Presnal went 2-4 in the game to lead the Rams.
Cumberlands advances in the winner's bracket and will face second-seed Indiana Tech Tuesday, May 14, at 3:30 p.m. Mobile falls to elimination bracket and will face the winner of the Baker vs. Lyon game Tuesday at 7 p.m.
