Patriot Baseball Tripped Up by Tigers in MSC Tournament Semifinals

Bowling Green, KY – With a trip to the MSC Tournament Championship game on the line, the UC Baseball Patriots would take to the field at Bowling Green Park to take on the Tigers of Campbellsville University, who were looking to continue to play spoiler as they had already upset second-seeded Georgetown College to get to this point. UC would take an early lead, but it was a big inning for the Tigers that would send them to a 6-2 win over the Patriots in the MSC semifinals. The loss moves the Patriots to 44-7 overall on the year and now to the elimination bracket of the MSC Tournament.

The Patriots were able to get runners on in both the first and second innings but were unable to bring them across to score. In the third, Robbie Stroub would lead off the inning with a double deep to left field. Britton Elmore would come in to run for Stroub as Orley Arellano would lay down the sacrifice bunt to get Elmore to third with one down. Raudy Martinez would step to the plate to have a chance at driving in Elmore, but he did much more than that. On a 1-0 pitch, Martinez would drill it deep over the left field fence off the advertisements for a two-run home run, his 13th of the year, to make it 2-0 Patriots. Bryan Leef would follow with a single to right. With two down, Leef would steal second and make his way to third on a throwing error by the Tigers' catcher. The runner would be stranded though as Bryan Benz would go down on strikes to end the inning up two.

In the top of the fifth, Campbellsville would cut into the lead with an RBI single by Chris Taitague to make it 2-1 Patriots. Another RBI single by Jack Bauer in the top of the seventh would tie the game at 2-2 as UC would have to go to the bullpen for starter Josh Avila. In the eighth, the Tigers would draw six walks against the Patriots' bullpen as they were able to put four runs across the plate to take a 6-2 lead that would hold up for the victory over the top-seeded Patriots.

The loss would go to Patriot reliever Nathan Geissler, who went just one inning allowing four runs on one hit and three walks while striking out one. Starter Josh Avila went 6.2 innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a walk while fanning six.

The Patriots now move to the elimination bracket as they will face the winner of tonight's Cumberland University-Georgetown College matchup in an elimination game at 1 pm central time. The winner of that game moves on to take on the Tigers of Campbellsville on Saturday night at 6 pm central time.
