Bowling Green, KY – The Patriot Baseball found themselves in the elimination bracket of the Mid-South Conference Tournament on Saturday against the Phoenix of Cumberland University. The winner of the game would move on for an opportunity to take on the Tigers of Campbellsville University in the MSC Tournament Championship. UC got off to the right start but would fall just short in a 3-2 loss to the Phoenix, finishing the day at 44-8 overall and eliminated from the MSC Tournament.
Zach Hurley would get the start for the Patriots and give yet another solid showing, but the lack of offensive support would plague the start. In the first, the Patriots would open up scoring with runners on the corners and two down.
Bryan Benz would double to left-center, bringing home a run to make it 1-0 Patriots. The Phoenix would respond in the top of the third with an RBI single from Eddie McDaniels, knotting the game up at 1-1.
The dual between Hurley and Phoenix starting pitcher Blake Young would continue a scoreless trend until the top of the eighth. With two down and runners on in scoring position, Tyler Jones would single to right-center, bringing in both runners to give the Phoenix a 3-1 lead. Benz would lead off the ninth inning with a solo home run to right field, his team leading 18
th home run of the season, to make it 3-2 Phoenix, but UC could not find anymore offense in the contest, ending their run in the MSC Tournament.
The loss would go to Hurley who went eight innings giving up three earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out eight.
UC now will return home to compete in the NAIA World Series Opening Round as they host the Williamsburg Bracket for the second consecutive season. The first games being played on Monday, May 13
th at Doyle Buhl Stadium in Williamsburg, KY. Opening Round qualifiers and brackets will be announced Thursday, May 9
th at 4 pm CDT on the NAIA Facebook page.
