Williamsburg, KY- No winner could be decided after extra time under the lights Sunday night, when UC women's soccer tied 1-1 against the 8th-ranked Georgia Gwinnett at the UC Soccer Complex.
Naira Lopez netted the only Patriot goal of the game, moving the team to 3-0-1 on the season.
The Grizzlies got off to a strong start, dominating offensive possession in the first 15 minutes of the match, and taking a pair of shots before Cumberlands found their attacking momentum. UC forced Georgia Gwinnett's backline to make four saves before the midway point of the half, with shots on goal from
Shara Randez,
Amy Anderson, and Lopez. With 16:55 remaining, Georgia Gwinnett forward Jenny Stadin broke past the UC midfield, facing a one-on-one matchup with Cumberlands goalie
Nicole Panis. Panis met Stadin ten yards outside the penalty box and came up big with double save to keep the Grizzlies off the scoreboard and the game at a 0-0 tie. Both UC and Georgia Gwinnetts' backlines held strong to keep the score at 0-0 going into halftime.
As the second half got underway, attacking efficiency proved to pay off for both sides. In UC's first shot of the half, Anderson dodged around her defender to cross the ball to Lopez, who took a shot at the door step of the goal, putting the Patriots up 1-0 with 37:07 left in the match. Georgia Gwinnett did not waste time and responded with the equalizer ten minutes later, tying up the match 1-1. The back-and-forth action continued late into the match before Georgia Gwinnett's Mariana Almanza ripped a shot towards the top-shelf of the net. It took all of Panis 5'10" stature to tip the ball over the goal and keep the score tied. With time winding down, Cumberlands had an opportunity as
Alanna Skinner pushed the ball forward to Anderson behind the defense, however, the shot deflected off the post sending the game into overtime tied at 1-1.
The first overtime began and ended with a pair of Anderson shots on goals, while the Patriot backline held the Grizzlies to just a single shot. The second overtime saw little attacking action but impressive defensive effort as neither backline allowed any shots to get off. However, extra time was not enough to decide a victor as each team battled back and forth before finishing the game in a 1-1 lock.
Panis recorded six saves and Lopez scored the single goal of the night.
