Genders’ Career Day Not Enough as Patriots Fall to #9 Blue Raiders

Williamsburg, KY – Abbie Genders recorded a career-high 16 kills and tied her career-high with eight blocks, however, it wasn't enough as the University of the Cumberlands volleyball team fell to ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson 3-0 (32-30, 25-22, 25-23) Tuesday night at the UC Volleyball Gym. With the win, the Blue Raiders improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while the Patriots move to 8-4 and 0-2 against the MSC.

Lindsey Wilson jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first set before UC cut the deficit to 6-5.  After trading points, Lexi Lester found Ashley Sobocinski for a kill, which sparked a 5-0 run for the Patriots to take a 12-10 lead.  The set was tied eight times until Genders converted consecutive kills coupled with a Leah Crist block to give UC a 22-20 edge. Lindsey Wilson responded with four straight points  before the Patriots added three more points, including a pair of blocks from Genders and Mackenzie Koch to take a 25-24 lead.  Cumberlands would have two chances to close out the set but couldn't convert either as the Blue Raiders took the set 32-30 for the 1-0 lead.

Genders, Lily Chapman, and Koch each tallied a kill to start the second set to give UC a 3-2 lead.  Lindsey Wilson responded with an 8-4 run to take a 10-7 lead before UC notched four straight points to take an 11-10 lead.  The set had six ties with the final one coming at 21-21.  Lindsey Wilson recorded three straight points and eventually took the set 25-22 to take a 2-0 lead.

Anna Zuniga dished out three assists to give Cumberlands a 5-2 lead to begin the third set.  After the two teams traded points Sobocinski put down back-to-back kills to give UC a 9-6 lead.  Later in the set, the Patriots utilized a 4-0 run, including a kill by Genders, to take a 13-10 advantage. The match was tied five times before the Blue Raiders used a 3-0 run to take a 20-17 lead.  Crist recorded a kill and an assisted block with Genders to cut the deficit to 22-21.
