Campbellsville, KY – Patriots senior
Mackenzie Koch notched her 200th career block and tallied six blocks and a season-high 12 kills, but it wasn't enough as University of the Cumberlands volleyball team fell to Campbellsville 3-2 (25-23, 27-25, 24-26, 13-25, 10-15) Friday Night night at Gosser Gym. With the win, the Tigers improve to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while the Patriots move to 8-5 and 0-3 against the MSC.
Anna Zuniga dished out a pair of assists early in the first set to give UC a 4-2 lead. The teams traded points tying the score at 9-9 before the Patriots utilized a 5-1 run, including kills from
Olivia Verdecchia,
Leah Crist, and
Abbie Genders, to take a 14-10 lead. The Tigers used a 6-1 run to retake the lead at 16-15. After the set was tied eight times and with the score evened at 23-23,
Juliet Montague connected with Genders for a kill. Koch followed with her fourth kill of the set to clinch the match 25-23 and give UC a 1-0 lead.
Cumberlands carried the momentum into the second set taking an early 5-1 advantage. Campbellsville responded by taking the lead and holding a five-point advantage twice with the last one coming at 15-10. From that point, the Patriots started to rally using a trio of runs to tie the match at 17-17. UC tallied a 6-1 run, including a pair of kills from
Ashley Sobocinski to give the Patriots a 23-20 advantage. The Tigers evened the score before UC got a pair of blocks to win the second set 27-25 and extend their lead to 2-0.
Campbellsville jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the third set but UC consecutive service aces by
Juliet Montague gave UC a 7-6 lead. On the next point Koch and Genders combined for the block, the 200th of her career, to extend Cumberlands lead. The Tigers utilized an 8-1 run to retake the lead 14-11 and later extended it to 19-14. UC continued to battle after recording three straight points, a Montague kill sparked a 5-0 which gave the Patriots a 22-21 advantage. A Koch kill extended UC's lead to 24-23, however, Campbellsville scored three straight points to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Tigers won the fourth and fifth sets 25-13 and 25-10, respectfully, to take the match 3-2.
In addition to Koch, Genders notched a team-high 13 kills, while Chapman and Sobocinski finished with seven kills each. Chapman added a season-high seven blocks and Crist finished with five as UC had five players tally at least ten digs led by Sobocinski with 18. Zuniga dished out 25 assists as
Lexi Lester notched 17 assists and 12 digs in the match.
The Patriots will return to action Tuesday, September 17, when they travel to Georgetown, KY to face the Tigers. First serve is set for 7 p.m. with live stats available
