Williamsburg, KY – University of the Cumberlands Assistant Women's Soccer Coach John Newbery has stepped down from his position to become the Head Women's Soccer Coach at Point Park University, the athletic department announced on Tuesday. Newbery spent the past five season at UC helping turn the Patriots into an NAIA national qualifier.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity that I have had at Cumberlands and helping the program develop into a national contender over the past several years," said Newbery. "It is even more special that I got to do it at my alma mater and I can't thank Coach Hamilton and the players for everything that they've done."
Over his five years as an assistant coach with the women's team, the Patriots have played to a 57-30-8 (21-10-5 Mid-South Conference) record, including a 2-5 mark in MSC Tournament play. Cumberlands posted four ten-win seasons, including notching 15 wins in each of the past two years. The Patriots finished the 2019 season with a 15-4-1 record and advanced to the Opening Round of the NAIA National Championships.
"We are extremely excited for this opportunity that Coach Newbery has and appreciate everything that he has done for the Patriots over the past several years," said Head Coach Steve Hamilton. "He has been instrumental in helping elevate Cumberlands onto the national scene.
Newberry began coaching the men's keepers in 2019, helping them to a 10-7-2 overall record, 5-3 in MSC play. Under his tutelage, Newberry saw his keepers note 17 shutout wins between both programs in 2019. Over his Patriots tenure, his players have amassed 49 clean sheets, collected 446 saves (3.912 per game), and allowed 144 goals (1.25 GAA).
Cumberlands women's soccer had two Mid-South Conference First Team All-Conference goalies that garnered nine MSC Defensive Player of the Week Awards over his tenure. That included Nicole Panis, who became UC's first goalie to earn NAIA All-American Honorable Mention Honors in 2019. Newbery also coached Akililu Zambataro to three MSC Defensive Player of the Week accolades and a second team all-conference selection on the men's side in 2019.
Newbery will take over a Pioneers program that went 7-12-2 last season with a 4-1-1 record in the River States Conference.
