Patriots Men’s Swimming Sweeps Bears in Season Opener

The UC men's swimming opened up its 2020-21 season in dominating fashion winning all 14 races en route to a 192-45 win over Shawnee State Thursday night.  It marks the fifth straight season that the Patriots have been victorious in their season opener.

Mats Kamnes and Nic Cecioni led the way for UC with two wins each, while eight other swimmers recorded their first win of the season.  Kamnes opened the meet by winning the 200-meter free with a time of 2:00.77, before touching the wall in 2:17.82 to led a trio of Patriots in the 200 IM.

Cecioni picked up right where he left off last season finishing first in both the 100 and 200 back.  The Paraparaumu, New Zealand native touched the wall in 1:02.71 and 2:17.41, respectfully.  Newcomer Eli Henry finished runner-up in both events swimming 1:05.30 and 2:22.93.

In the 50-meter free, Gavin Fuchs out-touched Daniel Ruiz Ramis by .04 seconds to take the top spot with a time of 24.48.  Later in the meet, Ruiz Ramis earned his first collegiate win after finishing with a time of 56.21 in the 100 free. 

Evan Hawkins and Alan Senn continue to represent UC's distance teams as they placed first in the 400 and 800 free, respectfully.  Hawkins went 4:30.59, while Senn touched the wall at 9:06.43.

In the second closest race of the night, Nathan Souza edged out Mikolaj Kala 1:07.85 to 1:07.93 in the 100 breast.  Kala returned with a vengeance going 2:31.52 to win the 200 breast.

Newcomer Martin Herion has an impressive debut for Cumberlands as took top honors in the 100 fly with a time of 59.46.  Charles Wolfram pulled away from the field in the 200 fly to place first with a time of 2:16.12.

UC closed out the meet with Ruiz Ramis, Souza, Fuchs, and Wolfram teaming up to win the 200 free relay with a time of 1:42.43.

The Patriots will return to the water Friday, October 30, when they host Union and Thomas More in a tri-meet at the Patriots Aquatic Center.  UC's home opener is scheduled for 4 p.m., with live video available here.
