Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | UC Athletics

Pats Spook Cavs on Halloween

Black Mountain, NC- The Patriots women's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday night, to take on the Montreat Cavaliers. Senior Sylvia Veloso had hot hands as she recorded 19 points in the first half to lead the Patriots to an 83-49 victory. Cumberlands advances their record to 2-0 while Montreat drops to 0-1.

The game got off to a slow start as both teams swapped possessions until Veloso got UC on the board with 7:34 remaining in the first quarter. Turning into a physical game early on, the Patriots went 7-10 from the free throw line and held the Cavaliers offense to 32% from the field. Cumberlands finished the first quarter up 20-14 on Montreat.

It was all Patriots for the next ten minutes as they outscored the Cavaliers 26-9 in the second quarter. Cumberlands hit three buckets from behind the arc, starting with a wide-open shot from Channing Lewis assisted by Addison Wilson midway through the second to lengthen UC's lead 29-19. UC continued their fast-paced offense, going on a 17-4 run to end the half.

Although starting the second half on defense, the Patriots quickly found their offensive momentum as Wilson drilled a three less than one minute into the third quarter. The long shots kept coming for the Pats as Hannah Lawson, Shelby Moore, and Lewis sank threes in back-to-back-to-back shots. UC went an impressive 67% from the field as they headed into the final quarter of play, up 66-36 on Montreat.

The fourth quarter played out similar to the past three, with the Patriots continuing their dominance. Destiny Haworth drained a three to extend Cumberlands' lead to 79-39; their largest lead of the game. Olivia Federle scored the final points for UC to push the Pats over the Cavs, 83-49.

The Patriots had three players in double figures for the second straight game as Veloso went 5-9 from the field, recording 19 points and two rebounds. Lewis added 19 points and 6 rebounds, while Vilma Covane tallied eight points and three rebounds. Cumberlands scored over half of their points off the bench, with 42 respectively.

The Patriots get a ten day break before getting back to competition at home on November 10 against Alice Lloyd. Game time is set for 6 pm with live video available here and live stats available here.
