Williamsburg, KY –
Samantha Tullar and
Bella Ricchiazzi combined for 10 goals and three assists to lead the third-ranked UC women's lacrosse team to a 14-13 win Sunday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win the Patriots improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Blue Devils move to 2-1.
Tullar led the way for Cumberlands with six goals, an assists, and nine draw controls, while Ricchiazzi added four goals and two assists.
Stephanie Meyer chipped in a pair of goals to go along with four ground balls.
Elizabeth Fladung and
Hannah Churchley each scooped four ground balls, while Fladung and
Trinity Brown both forced three turnovers.
The Patriots came out strong right from the opening draw as
Emily Heim grabbed the draw control. On the ensuing possession Tullar made a quick move and scored giving UC a 1-0 lead 20 seconds into the first half. Tullar added a pair of goals within 15 seconds of each other to extend Cumberlands lead to 3-0 with 24:50 remaining. Lawrence Tech netted back-to-back goals, before Ricchiazzi put a well-placed shot to the upper right corner extending the lead to 4-2.
The score remained that way until the 16:46 mark when Tullar connected with Meyer, who made a shovel shot past the keeper to make it 5-2. Cumberlands added goals from Tullar and
Florence Andrieu to push the lead to 7-2 midway through the first half. The Blue Devils scored four unanswered goals, over a five-minute span to cut the lead to 7-6. The score stayed that way until the final minute of the half, when Meyer scooped the ground ball, off a Ricchiazzi shot, and fired it home for her first multi-goal game of the season. UC added another goal to take a 9-6 lead into the break.
Ricchiazzi got the scoring started in the second half splitting two defenders and finding the back of the cage to push the lead to 10-6. Lawrence Tech went of a 4-2 run to cut the lead to 12-10 with 18:41 remaining. Cumberlands took advantage of a Blue Devils' penalty as
Katie Brewer put a shovel shot into lower corner of the cage for a man-up goal. The combination of Ricchiazzi and Tullar connected for UC's final goal at 14:04 mark with the Patriots leading 14-10. Lawrence Tech added three goals over the next 13 minutes to make it a 14-13 game, however, while the Blue Devils were looking for the equalizer Brown force a turnover and Crump secured the ground ball to allow UC to hold on to the one goal win.
Cumberlands will return to the field Saturday, February 29, when they host Columbia at the UC Lacrosse Complex. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. with live stats available
