Veloso’s Career-High Paces Patriots Past Phoenix

Williamsburg, KY  – Junior Silvia Veloso recorded a career-high 25 points, including nine field goals, to pace the Patriots women's basketball team to a 69-42 win over Cumberland Saturday afternoon on Randy Vernon Court. With the win, the Patriots improve to 18-6 on the season, while the Pheonix move to 7-15.

In addition to Veloso, who grabbed six rebounds, Carla Covane recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Hannah Lawson chipped in 12 points.  Reagan Begole finished with eight points in the win.

Cumberlands came out strong as Silvia Veloso netted the Patriots first nine points to give UC the early 9-2 lead with 4:17 remaining in the first quarter.  Cumberland went on a 5-0 run, however Veloso found Hannah Lawson for a three-pointer to push the lead to 12-7 with two minutes left.  Reagan Begole added a bucket in the final seconds of the quarter to help Cumberlands double-up the Phoenix 14-7.

The two teams traded buckets throughout the first five minutes of the second quarter as UC got field goals from Carla Covane and Lawson to give the Patriots a 20-13 lead at the 5:10 mark.  Field goals from Covane, Veloso, and Addison Wilson extend the lead to 18-17 with 3:03 left.  The Patriots outscored the Phoenix 6-4 over the final minutes of the half to take a 34-21 lead into the break.

Cumberlands sank four free throws, while Veloso added a pair of buckets to give UC a 42-28 lead with 3:38 left in the third quarter.  The Patriots added four more from the charity stripe as a Begole field pushed the lead to 18 points two minutes later.  Covane and Begole each netted a bucket to give Cumberlands a 54-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Lawson and Megan Morton combined for UC's first eight points of the fourth quarter extending the lead to 62-33 four minutes into the quarter. Veloso drained a three as Jasmyne Stewart recorded the final four points for the 69-42 final.
