Williamsburg, KY – For the second straight game, the fourth-ranked UC men's lacrosse team scored at least six goals in the first quarter en route to a 20-4 win over Concordia Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win the Patriots improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Cardinals move to 2-2.
For the second time in two games Cumberlands had 11 different players net at least one goal.
Dylan Crouch and Dylan Vanover led the way for UC with four goals apiece.
Dalton Smith,
Holden Lowes, and
Preston Brooks each notched multi-goal games.
Jake Morgan led the Patriot defense with four caused turnovers and nine ground balls.
Schyler Pennington went 11-16 on faceoffs and scooped seven ground balls, while
Whitten McCune was a perfect 3-3 on faceoffs with three points in the game.
Will Settle,
Dustin Soper, and Jason Marmick combined for 12 saves in the game.
The Patriots offense got things early as
Sam Collinson netted his first goal of the season to give UC a 1-0 lead three minutes in.
Will Settle made a save to keep the score 1-0, until
Dalton Smith put a well-placed shot into the cage to extend Cumberlands lead to 2-0 midway through the first half. Minutes later,
Christian Vanover scored an unassisted goal, which sparked a four-goal run over a two-minute span to extend UC's lead to 6-0. In addition to Vanover,
Holden Lowes and
Dawson Coltran each added goals, while
Whitten McCune dished out an assist during the run as the Patriots took a 6-0 lead into the second quarter.
UC's offensive efficiency continued in the second quarter as Lowes was one of five Patriots to score after he forced a caused turnover, scooped the ground ball, and fired it home to make it 7-0. Minutes later,
Jaret Williamson dodged towards the goal and made a diving shot for his first collegiate goal giving UC an 8-0 lead with 7:15 remaining.
Dylan Crouch netted three of the Patriots next four goals, before
Jake Morgan netted his first collegiate goal putting UC ahead 13-0 at the break.
Concordia looked to respond in the third quarter, however,
Dustin Soper saved a Ryan Iles shot a minute in to keep the Cardinals scoreless. Concordia got on the board three minutes later, before
Preston Brooks and Crouch notched consecutive goals to give the Patriots a 15-1 lead with 3:49 remaining. Each team added a goal in the final minutes giving Cumberlands a 16-2 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Justin Darley and Brooks each added a goal in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter extending the lead to 18-3. Two minutes later,
Whitten McCune connected with a well-placed shot past the keeper to make it 19-3 with 7:18 remaining. Vanover added a goal in the final minute for the 20-4 final.
Cumberlands will return to the field Sunday, March 8, when they host William Penn at the UC Lacrosse Complex. The game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. with live stats available
