Midway, KY – Patriots pick up their first conference win of the season after downing the Eagles 40-9. Leading the scoring efforts were falls by
Harold Gilmore,
Chasen Brown and
Turner Black.
Gilmore started the dual for the Patriots at 197 pounds, taking a 3-0 lead into the break on a stall call and takedown. The junior out of Alabama maintained control in the second period, noting his third fall of the season. His pin was the Patriots' fastest on the day, called at 3:51.
Coming off a double-victory weekend in Indiana, Brown continued his dominance in the 149-poiund weight class with a pin of his own. With a takedown in hand, the 18th-ranked grappler first looked for the fall after carrying a four-point nearfall through the first period buzzer. In the final period, he worked his way up from bottom and took advantage on the reversal, leading to the fall shortly after with 46 seconds remaining on the clock.
Black had a great shot at the legs of his Midway opponent, but time ran out in the first period before he could make something of it. The 165-pounder scored on a second-period scramble, rotating through a leg tie-up to get the takedown. Like his teammate, Black regained advantage in the third on the quick reversal to put his opponent in danger and get the fall at 5:19.
Aaron Johnson carried on the winning ways for the Patriots in the second match of the day. In the low scoring affair in the heavyweight bout, his lone first-period takedown made the difference in the match, which resulted in the 3-1 decision. Noteworthy of his performance was the ride time he accumulated, riding out the entire second period to note the point advantage.
Gage Hudson appeared in his collegiate dual debut walking away with the 11-2 major victory. He noted four key takedowns en route to the win, including a big lift in the final seconds to extend the margin and score bonus points for the Patriots. The Patriots extend the team score further to 19-0 after a forfeit at 133.
At 141,
Bryce Nickel kept advantage in a well-fought match. He scored the only takedowns in the contest, giving up two escapes total. He picked up the win on a 6-2 verdict. With the addition of Brown's fall, the Patriots led 28-0 after six rounds.
The Patriots scored 12 points on forfeit wins,
Ryan Franco getting credit at 133 and
Gabe Jacobs with the win at 184 pounds. With the exception of a forfeit at 157 pounds, Cumberlands only loss of the day came at 174 pounds.
