Patriots Women’s Swimming & Diving Dominant in Season Opener

Recording one of the most lopsided wins in program history, the second-ranked Patriots women's swimming & diving team swept the 16 event line-up, while also finishing the meet with 12 second place swims in a 224-10 win over Union Saturday morning.  Cumberlands recorded ten NAIA provisional standards as ten different Patriots tallied individual wins on the day.

Cumberlands opened the meet with Maria Basto, Isabella Cooksey, Aurora Stavoy and Hanne te Velthuis teaming up to go 4:07.45 in he 400 medley relay, winning the event by eight seconds.

Individually, five Patriots notched a pair of wins led by Emma Lehmkuhl, Ali Pecore, and Maria Basto. Lehmkuhl opened her season strong achieving NAIA "A" standards on both boards.  The second-year diver scored a 199.73 on the one-meter board, while Lehmkuhl scored a career-high 198.90 on the three-meter board surpassing the qualifying standard of 180.

In the water, newcomer Ali Pecore had an impressive debut taking top honors in both the 200 and 500 free.  The Oshkosh, WI native hit the wall in 2:00.18 to lead a trio of Patriots in the 200 free.  That time clipped the NAIA provisional cut by almost three seconds.  Pecore followed that up by negative splitting the 500 free to finish with a time of 5:18.52, which is eight seconds faster than the provisional cut. 

Looking for a strong junior campaign, Basto went 2:09.85 to win the 200 back and clip the national standard by six seconds. The Bogota, Colombia native followed it up by clocking a 2:15.61 to win the 200 IM. 

Newcomers Cooksey and Stavoy opened their careers with a pair of individual wins.  In the 200 breast, Cooksey edged out teammate Ashley Schoenlein by 0.13, 2:34.32 to 2:34.45, to win the event as both swimmers notched NAIA provisional standards.  Cooksey tallied her second win the 100 back where she clocked the winning time of 1:04.76.

Stavoy was strong in both the 100 and 200 fly finishing first with times of 1:01.64 and 2:23.54, respectively. 

UC had a pair of swimmers notch NAIA provisional standards in the 100 free as te Velthuis and Brianna Bender posted a one-two finish.  Te Velthuis clocked a 55.51, while Bender went 55.87 to earn their first national cuts of the season.

Anastasiia Shatalova went 25.77 to win the 50 free, while Elise Weiler was the top finisher in the 1000 free with a time of 11:46.32.  In the 100 breast,  Kayana Cook edged out Kaisey Speck as they wenrt 1:11.23 and 1:11.77, respectively.

Cumberlands will return to the water Saturday, October 16, when they host Shawnee State at the Patriots Aquatic Center.  The meet is slated to begin at 12 p.m. with live video available here.
