Williamsburg, KY - The Patriots picked up their fourth straight victory by defeating the Shawnee State Bears 6-0, this also marks their eighth shutout of the season.
Jayden Boelter tallied the hat trick, while Laura Navajas tallied one goal and three assists for UC. In total the Patriots seniors accounted for two goals and eight assists on senior night.
With the three assists, Navajas now moves up to tied for third all-time in Cumberlands women's soccer history with 28 career assists tying Nery Saucedo, who played from 2005-2008.
The Patriots controlled the game early on. The high pressure on the Shawnee State defense led to the eventual first goal of the game. Navajas sent a pass out wide to
Selena Barnett on the right side of the 18-yard box. She sent the ball into Boelter in the box, who shot the ball into the back of the net. The Patriots took a 1-0 just eight minutes into the contest.
Boelter tallied the brace just three minutes later. Navajas sent a ball to
Jillian Zurborg. Zurborg passed the ball up to Boelter who made a sliding shot that went right past the goalie to give UC the 2-0 lead.
In the 22
nd minute of the match, Boelter found the net for the third time. After forcing a turnover, Boelter had on defender and the goalie to beat. She fired a shot just outside the 18-yard box that deflected off the goalie and crossed the goal line.
In the first half the Bears outshot UC 6-3, but all three shots for Cumberlands found the net.
Laura Vogt made four saves in the first half to keep Shawnee off the board.
The start of the second half was once again dominated by the Patriots. In the 50
th minute, Zurborg managed to beat three Bears defenders and pass the ball off to Navajas in the center of the field. Navajas used two touches and fired a shot to the lower left corner of the goal to give UC the 4-0 lead.
Not even two minutes later, Cumberlands pushed their lead over Shawnee to five goals. Navajas once again sent a pass out wide to Barnett just outside the 18-yard box. Barnett chipped a pass towards the center of the goalie box and
Jenna Rockwell headed it into the back of the net.
The final Patriot goal came in the 82
nd minute of the match.
Rylee Hardley sent a goal kick up to center field. Rockwell was able to get her head on the kick and send it past all of the Shawnee state defenders.
Matija Yocum ran down the ball and was one on one with the goalie. Yocum dribbled around the diving goalkeeper and fired the ball into the net to give UC a 6-0 lead.
Today was a big day for Cumberlands women's soccer as they honored 10 seniors for their dedication to the program. For the second straight season, the Patriots won 6-0 on senior day.
Savanah Prigmore saw some action in the match and made a couple saves to combine for a shutout over the Bears.
Boelter's hat trick is the second of her career and her first this season. The three assists for Navajas is the fourth most all-time in a single game for a UC women's soccer play. For Barnett it marked her third multi-assist game of her career, while Zurborg tallies her first career multi-assist game. It also marks the first time since September 1, 2018 that Rockwell recorded a goal and an assist in the same game.
With the win, UC moves to 10-3-1 on the year and 4-3-1 in Mid-South Conference play. Cumberlands will travel to Georgetown, KY on Wednesday October 20 for a matchup against the Tigers. Kickoff is set for 8:30 PM and live video available
