Four Double-Doubles Lead to A Patriots Win

Williamsburg, KY – Four Patriots record double-doubles as Cumberlands volleyball defeats RV Campbellsville 3-1 (25-22, 25-27, 25-20, 25-22), Friday night at the UC Volleyball Gym. Anna Blumeier, Lily Chapman, Lexi Lester, and Savanah Schwarz each garnered a double-double, while Juliet Banks notched a career-high six aces.

Patriots controlled today's match from the defensive side tallying 25 blocks and 95 digs as a team. The stat leaders for today were Danielle Jackson who notched a team high seven blocks, while Banks and Chapman notched 22 digs each. Olivia Verdecchia and Emily Prewitt tallied five blocks apiece, and Shelby Lackey added four blocks. On the offensive side Lester came away with 23 assists and an ace, Schwarz added 17 assists and an ace. While Chapman notched 13 kills and Blumeier added 13 kills and three aces.

Head Coach Kathryn Hart said, "I am so proud of these young ladies. We really focused on staying positive and maintaining our confidence throughout the entire match. We executed in all facets of the game, especially on defense."

The first Patriots point was scored on a block by Verdecchia and Prewitt. Chapman would then notch back-to-back kills, and Verdecchia would add one of her own. Later in the set, UC would fall behind but some timely kills by Lackey, Jackson, and Blumeier would give the Patriots the lead and force a Tigers timeout. Following the timeout the Patriots would notch three straight kills by Lackey, Chapman, and then Blumeier. That forced another Tigers timeout. A block by Prewitt and Blumeier would get UC to set point, and Verdecchia finished it with a kill.

Campbellsville would respond and take set two after falling behind early. In set three Cumberlands would start the set with a 10-1 run. The run started with a kill by Prewitt, then Blumeier would tally an ace and a kill. Then Jackson would get a kill. Banks would then get two aces. The Tigers would cut the gap to 12-11. But Blumeier would stop the Tigers run with back-to-back kills. Later in the set UC would go on another run, the run featured a kill by Chapman, an ace from Banks, then a block from Jackson and Verdecchia, and then back-to back aces by Banks. The set ended on a block by Jackson and Lackey.

The fourth set opened with back-and-forth play in the first eight plays. But it would start to push in the Patriots favor after a block by Jackson and Lackey, two kills by Blumeier and a kill by Lackey. Later in the set Cumberlands would open a four-point lead 20-16. After back-to-back errors by the Tigers Lester would notch an ace. Another error by the Tigers would get UC to match point, then a kill by Chapman would end the day.

The Patriots advance to 15-8 on the season and is 6-5 against conference foes. The Patriots will go back on the road for their next match at Pikeville on Tuesday October 19 at 7 PM. For Live Stats click here (XML).
