Pikeville, KY – The Patriots fell in the first set, but rebounds and takes the next three sets, for a 3-1 win over Pikeville (22-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22).
Cumberlands saw two double-doubles in this match. The first by
Lily Chapman who came away with 15 kills and 15 digs. With tonight's numbers, Chapman moves up in the Patriots history books, as she is now sitting in fourth place in career kills.
Anna Blumeier had the other double-double, notching 15 kills and 13 digs.
Shelby Lackey added eight kills, while
Danielle Jackson came away with six kills.
Juliet Banks notched the game-high 20 digs.
Savanah Schwarz led the passing attack with 20 assists, and
Lexi Lester added 18 assists.
UC lost the first set. In the second set the Patriots found themselves trailing early 4-9. UC would then go on a 6-1 run to take the lead. The run featured kills by Lackey and Blumeier, as well as a block from
Olivia Verdecchia. After that run the Bears would score three straight points. The Patriots would then go on a 9-0 run. This run saw two kills by Chapman and Jackson, one kill from Verdecchia, and two aces by Banks. Jackson and Chapman also notched a block during the run. A Bears error got UC to set point and a kill by Blumeier ended it.
The third set started tightly contested, with the score being 6-7. The Patriots would then go on a 9-2 run to take the lead 15-9. During the run Blumeier came away with three kills and an ace, while Jackson, Lackey, and Chapman notched a kill each. The Bears would then go on a run of their own to cut the gap to one, 17-16. Chapman stopped that run with two kills and an ace.
Allyson Grava would then notch an ace of her own. Blumeier would then come away with the last kill of the set to get UC to 23-19. The set would end on errors by the Bears.
The fourth set was tight the whole way through. When the set was tied 18-18, Blumeier notched a kill and that forced a Pikeville timeout. Following the timeout, the Bears tied it back up. Jackson and Blumeier then came away with back-to-back kills, 21-19. Lackey and Blumeier notched a kill each to extend the lead to three, 23-20. Verdecchia got the Patriots to match point with a kill, then a Pikeville error would end the set.
The Patriots advance to 16-8 on the season and is 7-5 against conference foes. The Patriots are now in the tail end of their season with five matches left, three at home and two on the road.
