Patriots Capture Fourth Consecutive 3D National Championship

Foley, AL – The University of the Cumberlands archery team has made finishing atop the podium a second home as they tallied 174 points to clinch their fourth straight USA Archery 3D National Championship Saturday night.  The Patriots notched four national titles, 18 podium finishes, and seven program records on the weekend.

"I'm extremely proud and excited for this championship as this team really came together throughout the whole tournament," said Head Coach Kris Strebeck.  "We were shooting well throughout the weekend and this team continued to preserve in the team rounds, which played a vital role in the overall team standings."

Hannah Moose and Madison Cox each captured their third individual national championship in their respective disciplines. Moose led wire-to-wire in the women's compound division to capture her third career national title, including her second 3D national championship.  The grad student finished the tournament with a 484 and hit 29 bonus rings en route to breaking Cumberlands record by 16 points. 

After entering the day in fifth place, Cox carded a tournament best 250 in the second to finish the tournament with a 456 and 17 12's to capture the gold medal. This marks the sixth consecutive podium finish for Cox, moving her into a tie for second-most in program history.  The McKee, KY native broke the school record by four points and is the fourth Patriot to tally three individual national titles.

Teammate Kaitlyn Shields finished runner-up in the women's bowhunter division with a 450. This marks Shields highest individual finish at a national championship as she posted the third best qualifying score in program history. 

Cumberlands had four individual bronze medalist led by Brooke Miller in women's compound.  Miller was the second of four Patriots to score in the individual events after shooting a 470 with 23 bonus rings.  The Lewistown, MO native is tied with Cox for second all-time with six individual podium finishes as she tallied her third bronze medal.  Finishing just off the podium was Amanda Newland, who tallied a 438 with 20 bonus rings to place fourth, while Danielle Woodie jumped four spots on day two to finish sixth after carding a 436. 

Jacob Valentini led a trio of Patriots in the men's recurve division as he carded a 232 on the final day to break the school record and earn his first individual national podium finish.  Valentini finished third in the event becoming the first men's recurve shooter to earn an individual medal.  In women's recurve Lidia Quezada set a 14 point program record en route to capturing the bronze medal.  Quezada notched a 427 and hit eight 12's over the two-day span.  Teammate Ceridwyn Salyers tallied a 396 to place fifth and earn four points for UC.

Sierra Gray notched the final individual podium finish as she earned a bronze medal in the women's barebow class.  The Leitchfield, KY native tallied a 179 in the second round to shoot a 348 for the tournament.  Cumberlands had a pair of scorers in the men's barebow division as Tyler Woosley and Elijah Crawford finished sixth and seventh, respectfully.

Jase Boils hit 29 bonus rings to tie the program record of 456 in the men's compound division.  Boils placed fifth overall in the division to score four points.

In addition the Patriots individual success UC notched 11 podium finishes in team rounds, including recording two more national titles.  Moose and Boils teamed up to earn gold in the mixed compound team event, while Quezada, Salyers, and Whitney Vandiver tallied Cumberlands second women's recurve team gold medal, and their first since the 2015 3D national championships.

The mixed team rounds garnered a pair of silver and a bronze medal for UC.  Cox and Brandon Durham notched a silver medal in mixed bowhunter with a score of 860, while Valentini and Quezada combined for an 822 to place runner-up in mixed recurve.  The duo of Woosley and Gray tallied a bronze medal with a score of 657.

The Patriots garnered three more bronze medals in the team rounds as UC's men's bowhunter team, women's bowhunter team, and women's compound team all finished as national runner-ups. 
Cumberlands women's barebow and men's recurve team also found themselves on the podium as they earned bronze medals and scored six points for the team.

In the final event of the day, the mixed disciplinary team rounds, the Patriots trio of Boils, Cox, and Valentini notched the final medal of the day.  After knocking off Texas A&M in the semifinals, UC earned a silver medal in the event to clinch their fourth straight title and fifth championship in six years.

MSC rival Pikeville placed second with 164 points. Lindsey Wilson and Union finished third and fourth, respectfully, in the overall team standings.

Cumberlands will now shift their focus to the indoor season with the MSC Championship and USA Archery Regionals set to take place late January or early February.
