Patriots Men’s Swimming Remains Unbeaten with 206-52 Win

Williamsburg, KY – Second-ranked UC men's swimming achieved nine NAIA provisional cuts and posted 13 wins in their home opener against Shawnee State defeating the Bears 206-52 Saturday afternoon at the Patriots Aquatic Center.  Eight different Patriot swimmers clipped NAIA provisional standards for the first time this season.

Leading the way for Cumberlands is Kacper Sobieszuk, who notched national cuts in both of his winning performances.  The freshman went 52.13 in the 100 fly before clocking a 53.96 in the 100 back.  His fly time is the eighth fastest time in the NAIA this season.  

Ruben Gonzalez de Oliveira tallied a pair of wins and a provisional cut on the day.  He posted the third fastest time in the country pulling away from the field in the 200 free, clocking a 1:43.64.  Gonzalez de Oliveira also took top honors in the 200 IM with a winning time of 2:00.25.  Teammate Mateu Veny Oliver finished second in the 200 free with a provisional time of 1:47.10. 

In the 50 free, Enzo Esteves edged out the competition to go 21.29 and win the event, while Julio Heck da Silver placed third touching the wall in 21.74. 

UC added a pair of national standards in the 100 breast as Nathan Souza and Mikolaj Kala went 59.13 and 59.17, respectfully, for the one-two finish.  Andres Caicedo clocked a 2:13.67 to win the 200 breast by four seconds.

Martin Herion notched the final provisional cut of the day as he pulled away from the field to win the 200 fly with a time of 1:57.84. 

Veny Oliver, Trey Wolfram, and John Morgan McDonald each earned a win on the afternoon. Veny Oliver won the 200 back (2:00.40), while Wolfram (5:06.75) and Morgan McDonald (10:13.42) led the 500 free and 1000 free for Cumberlands.

The Patriots closed out the meet with Herion, Daniel Ruiz Ramis, Esteves and Heck da Silva touching the wall in 1:27.69 to win the 200 free relay. 

UC will return to the water Saturday, October 30, when they host Berry College. The meet is set for 10 a.m. with live video available here.
