18 National Cuts Highlights UC Women’s Swimming & Diving Sweep of Shawnee State

The second-ranked Patriots women's swimming & diving team recorded its second sweep of the season as they defeated Shawnee State 213-53 in their home opener Saturday afternoon at the Patriots Aquatic Center.  Cumberlands achieved 18 NAIA national cuts over the course of the meet, including four "A" standards.

UC set the tone for this meet early as Maria Basto, Kayana Cook, Aurora Stavoy, and Hanne te Velthuis teamed up to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:50.03.  That time is the second fastest time in the NAIA this season and achieves a national "A" standard.

Basto headlined five Patriots that tallied a pair of individual national cuts.  The sophomore clocked a 57.88 in the 100 back to win the event by five seconds and notched an individual "A" standard.  That's her fastest time in the event since the 2020 NAIA National Championships when she went 57.35.  Basto capped off her day by winning the 100 fly, clocking a 59.26 to pull away from the field. 

Te Velthuis notched a pair of wins to go along with a couple of provisional cuts.  She pulled away from the field to win the 50 free with a time of 24.57, which is the second fastest time in the country.  Te Velthuis also ranks second in the 100 free, touching the wall in 53.70 to win the event.  Teammate Riley Cerquiera placed runner-up in the 50 free with a time of 25.56.

Ali Pecore, Stavoy, and Anastasiia Shatalova each earned a pair of national cuts on the day, including posting a one, two, three finish in the 200 free.  Pecore led the Patriots trio in the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:59.38, while Stavoy and Shatalova went 2:00.25 and 2:00.43, respectfully.  Pecore added a cut in the 100 free as she edged out Shatalova for second place finishing with a 54.46 as Shatalova went 55.00.

Stavoy added her second cut of the afternoon in the 100 fly as she went 1:00.72 to place second.  Also achieving a provisional cut was Brianna Bender, who touched the wall in 1:01.39. 

Emma Lehmkuhl improved on last week's performance on one-meter tallying a 197.40, which surpassed the "A" standard.

Isabella Cooksey tallied a pair of wins on the day as she went 2:14.78 in the 200 back, before taking the top spot in the 200 IM, with a time of 2:17.31. 

UC had a pair of national cuts in the breast stroke events as Cook clocked a 1:10.48 to win the 100 breast.  Ashley Schoenlein won the 200 breast with a time of 2:32.78 and placed second in the 100 breast going 1:11.07. 

Jami Margolen won the 1000 free (12:07.28), while Leah Thomas (5:39.80) and Sara Overly (2:26.75) finished first in the 500 free and 200 fly, respectfully.

Cumberlands closed out the meet with Pecore, Shatalova, Loftus, and te Velthuis teaming up to win the 200 free relay touching the wall in 1:41.00.
