Patriots Win a Five Set Thriller Over Georgetown

Williamsburg, KY – Patriots go all five sets against the Tigers to get the 3-2 win, (25-23, 25-19, 17-25, 20-25, 15-8) on Thursday evening.

In this conference match the Patriots saw two double-doubles, one from Lily Chapman and one from Lexi Lester. Chapman's double-double came by way of 24 kills and 16 digs, while Lester's double-double came from 23 assists and 13 digs. Savanah Schwarz came away with a team high 28 assists and added seven digs. Anna Blumeier was close to a double-double notching nine kills and 20 digs. The digs leader for today's match was Juliet Banks, who came away with 24 digs. Shelby Lackey added seven kills and four blocks, while Olivia Verdecchia added six kills. Emily Prewitt had one solo block and three block assists.

The Patriots jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first set. Following a small run by the Tigers, Schwarz would notch her first of two aces. Georgetown would go on a run to take the lead 16-13 and forced a Kathryn Hart timeout. Following the timeout UC would see kills from Chapman and Lackey, to tie the set 19-19. After three Tiger points the Patriots would use another timeout. After that timeout, UC would go on a 6-1 run to take the set. That run featured back-to-back kills by Danielle Jackson, and one from each Chapman, Blumeier, and Lackey.

The second set also started fast for UC, where they jumped out to an 8-3 lead. The Tigers would then go on an 8-4 run to close the gap 12-11. Then the set would get tied at 14-14, then the Patriots would go on a 5-0 run to force a Georgetown timeout. The run saw two kills, one from Jackson, and one from Chapman, as well as a block by Jackson and Lackey. Following the timeout Chapman would notch another two kills. Then Blumeier would come away with two kills of her own. Verdecchia would end the set with a kill.

The Tigers would rebound to take set three and four. Set five started off good for UC as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead, and never looked back. Those six points came by way of three kills by Chapman, one by Lackey, as well as two blocks. The first block came from Jackson and Lackey, while the second came from Lackey and Prewitt. Following a Georgetown timeout Chapman would come away with two more kills, then Prewitt would add one. Camryn Wells would notch her third kill of the night, to extend the lead to 11-7. Blumeier would then get UC to 13 with a kill. An error by the Tigers would give UC set and match point, then Jackson would end the day with a kill.

The Patriots advance to 17-8 on the season and is 8-5 against conference foes. The Patriots have now won three straight matches.
