Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

A Golden Goal from the #16 Blue Raiders Gives the Patriots their Third Straight Loss

Williamsburg, KY- In the #6 Patriots fourth straight matchup against a team mentioned in the NAIA Top-25 Coaches' poll, they fell to #16 Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders 2-1 in overtime.

The lone goal for UC came off the foot of Jillian Zurborg. The goal marks the second of the season for the Independence, KY native.

Cumberlands would kickoff to start the game at the UC Soccer Complex. The Patriots only needed 15 seconds to record the first goal of the match and to take the early lead. The ball would be kicked back to Alanna Skinner, who then sent a long pass forward towards the Lindsey Wilson goal. Ainhoa Camara would take possession of the ball and find Zurborg who was able to send a shot past the diving Blue Raiders goalie. This is the quickest goal scored by the Patriots this season, as well one of the quickest goals in UC women's soccer history.

Georgia Martell made some big saves for Cumberlands in the goal. Her first big save came in the 5th minute of the match when the Blue Raiders would look to even up the score at one early in the game. Lindsey Wilson was able to find the equalizer on a penalty shot in the 10th minute after a handball in the box. The rest of the half, the Blue Raiders controlled most of the possession. The Patriots got outshot by the Blue Raiders in the first half 5-3.

The second half was controlled by the UC offense. Cumberlands looked to take the lead early in the second half when Camara fired a hard shot at the goal, but Lindsey Wilson's goalie was able to save it before the ball crossed the goal line. The Blue Raiders quickly responded with a counter attack, but a diving save from Martell kept the game notched at one. Martell would have another big save in the 74th minute of the match. A Blue Raider forward beat most of the UC backline, but another great diving save from the Brisbane, Austrailia native kept the score even. The game would remain level through the full 90 minutes of play to send the game into overtime.

Lindsey Wilson was able to tally one more shot than the Patriots in the extra 10 minutes of play, unfortunately the extra shot was kicked into the goal by the Blue Raiders to give them a 2-1 victory with less than 30 seconds left in the overtime period.

#6 Cumberlands falls to 6-3-1 on the year and 0-3-1 in Mid-South Conference play. The Patriots will look to rebound from their match on Thursday, October 7 when they are set to travel to Freed-Hardeman for another MSC matchup. The match can be live streamed here.
