Barbourville, KY – UC keeps rolling as they swept St. Andrews 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-11), and then notched their tenth sweep on the season against Union (25-10, 25-21, 25-21) Saturday afternoon.
In the first match against the Knights,
Lily Chapman, and
Anna Blumeier both notched nine kills. Blumeier also came away with five digs and three aces, and Chapman added six digs and two aces.
Lexi Lester notched six kills while leading the passing game with 17 assists.
Juliet Banks led the team in digs with 12, and
Allyson Grava came away with two aces.
The first set was completely controlled by UC. The Patriots started the set 5-1, with Blumeier starting the match with back-to-back aces.
Danielle Jackson then put in back-to-back kills. With
Lexi Lester adding a kill. After some UC errors
Shelby Lackey got on the board with a kill. A few plays later
Olivia Verdecchia notched back-to-back kills. Then Blumeier got the Patriots to set point and a kill by Chapman ended it.
Chapman came back and scored the first point of the second set as well. Followed by an ace from Grava. The Knights was able to tie the game at 5-5, which did not last long because
Emily Prewitt put in a kill the next play. From there UC never let it get close again. Later in the set following three errors, UC called a timeout with the score 22-16. Following the timeout, Blumeier notched a kill. Then Jackson got a solo block and a kill to end the set.
In the third set UC never trailed. The offense got started with kills by Lester, Prewitt, and Chapman. After the Knights tied the set at 6-6, UC went on a 6-1 run featuring two kills by Lackey and one kill by Lester. Following a St. Andrews timeout, UC would go on a 5-1 run featuring another two kills by Lester, one from Chapman and Jackson, and an ace from Blumeier. After another St. Andrews timeout, UC would finish the set and the match on an 8-3 run. The run consisted of two kills from each Blumeier and Chapman, one ace from each Grava and Lester, as well as a block from Prewitt.
Against Union, Chapman led the way with a double-double, 14 kills and 11 digs. Verdecchia and Lackey both came away with seven kills apiece, and Blumeier added six kills. Lester led the passing game with 24 assists and
Savanah Schwarz came away with 14. Banks notched 13 digs, while Grava led the team in aces with three.
In the first set Chapman got the first kill for UC. Chapman and Prewitt came together for the first block of the game. Then kills by Chapman and Lackey gave UC a 9-4 lead. Following an error UC would go on a 5-2 run, causing a Union timeout. Following the timeout, Chapman would notch back-to-back kills, then Prewitt would get a kill. To end the set UC would go on a 9-2 run. The run featured three kills by Chapman, a kill by Lackey and Prewitt, with an ace from Schwarz.
UC started the second set on a 5-2 run. The run started with a kill by Jackson, followed by two aces from Grava and a Verdecchia kill. Chapman would then notch back-to-back kills. After the Bulldogs knotted the game at 10-10, Banks notched an ace to give the Patriots the lead. But the set remain tightly contested until the end. Union was able to tie the game at 18-18, forcing a
Kathryn Hart timeout. Following the timeout Prewitt notched a kill, while Jackson and Lackey came together to notch a block. Next Lackey got a kill to get the lead to 21-19. An error by the Bulldogs and a kill by Blumeier got the lead to four, 23-19. Forcing a Bulldog timeout. After the timeout, Verdecchia got the Patriots to set point, and a kill from Chapman ended the set.
Verdecchia got the set started with two kills, Chapman also added three kills. Lackey would then notch two kills and Blumeier would add a kill as UC would take control, 12-8. Errors by Union and kills from Blumeier and Jackson would add to the lead, 17-11. Grava would then come away with an ace, then Verdecchia and Chapman notched back-to-back kills to get the lead to nine, 20-11. Cumberlands was forced to call a timeout after a 5-0 run by the Bulldogs to cut the lead to three, 21-18. Coming out the timeout Union would tie the game at 21-21 forcing another timeout. Following that timeout Prewitt notched a kill to regain the lead. Then a Blumeier kill got the lead back to two, 23-21. Forcing a Union timeout. Following that timeout, a Bulldog error gave UC set point and Blumeier ended the set and the match with a kill.
The Patriots improve to 14-5 on the season. With the two wins today, UC matches their longest win streak of the season at six and will look to make it seven as they travel down to Marietta, GA to take on 12
