Patriots Comeback to Defeat the Tigers off the Brace from Riveros

Georgetown, KY – After trailing 1-0 early against Georgetown, (RV) Cumebrlands battled back to earn the 3-1 victory. The win marks the fifth straight win for UC improving them to 7-4-3 on the season.

Rodrigo Riveros continues to lead the Patriots offensively, picking up his third brace of the season. Shuma Sasaki also netted a goal, giving him his second on the year.

Georgetown got on the scoreboard first, in just the 5' minute of play. UC had a corner kick that they could not convert on, prompting GC to mount a counterattack. With the numbers in their favor, the Tigers netted a goal for the 1-0 lead.

That shot was just one of three total in the opening half for Georgetown, meanwhile Cumberlands fired off 15 shots, converting a pair of them.

In the 18th minute Riveros found the goal. He used his speed and foot skills to cut the ball in and around three Georgetown defenders. With his created space, Riveros fired the shot, slotting the ball into the net to tie the game at 1-1.

Just seven minutes later and Georgetown had a chance to take the lead, this time getting a chance off a free kick on the right side. GC sent the ball right at the top of the net, but goalkeeper Nathan Hart jumped to punch the ball over the cross bar, keeping it a 1-1.

In the waning minutes of the opening period Cumberlands found themselves on the attack once again and it was Riveros who once again created the scoring opportunity. The Asuncion, Paraguay native used his craft on the ball to create space between him and his defenders. Just 15 yards out on the left side, Riveros fired the ball into the right side of the goal to give UC the 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.

The second half remained in favor of the Patriots who had six shots, while the Tigers had just three. Cumberlands also led in corner kicks with four of their seven coming in the second half and Georgetown had their only corner kick in the first half.

The Patriots were able to convert for a goal in the 69th minute. They had put pressure on Georgetown once again. The ball went out to Sasaki just outside the 18-yard box on the right side of the field. He struck the ball sending it to the far post, his pace on the ball knocked it across the net and into the goal, pushing UC's lead to 3-1.

Georgetown had two of their shots in the final three minutes, but Hart once up to the challenge, not letting in any more goals.

The victory for UC makes it five straight and pushes them into fourth place in the Mid-South Conference with a 6-2-1 MSC record. This also marks the fifth straight game that Riveros has scored, giving him seven over those five games.

Cumberlands will return to the UC Soccer Complex for their final regular season home game of the year against Thomas More on Saturday, October 23. The Patriots will honor their seniors before the match, which is slotted for a 12:00 PM ET kick-off. The live stream for the match can be found here.
