Patriots Fend off Saints in 4-3 Win on Senior Day

Williamsburg, KY- Patriots make it six straight wins as they defeated Thomas More 4-3 on Senior Day. UC never trailed in the match and improved their season record to 8-4-3 and Mid-South Conference record to 7-2-1.

Cumberlands had four different goal scorers in the game in Rodrigo Riveros, Hrannar Magnusson, Joel Drewery and Gabriel Figurski Vieira.

UC wasted little time in the match, getting on the scoresheet in the fifth minute. Drewery played the ball out wide to Tommaso Ogliari on the left side. Ogliari crossed the ball right to Riveros at the six-yard box and his one time shot went into the net to give the Patriots the 1-0 lead.

Thomas More did answer back in the 15th minute of play on their first shot of the game. The Saints sent a ball into the box that had Nathan Hart come off his line, and the TMU attacker chipped it over him to tie it up at 1-1.

Over the next six minutes, the Saints fired off three shots on goal, but Hart stood his ground, making multiple diving stops. After jumping in the air to push the ball into the cross bar in the 19th minute, TMU had a point-blank shot in the 21st minute that required him to dive to his right and block from entering the net. Despite the pressure from Thomas More the game remained tied at 1-1 into halftime.

After the break, Cumberlands was in control of the game. In 56', UC had a corner kick on the right side. Liam Healey had a shallow cross that Magnusson ran onto and redirected with his foot, pushing it into the goal for his third of the season, putting UC up 2-1.

The Patriots used quick, concise passing in the 61st minute. Samir Hammami played the ball up to Shuma Saski who one touched a pass to Drewery running into the box. Drewery fired the shot just inside the box and into the net to extend UC's lead to 3-1.

Cumberlands kept the offense going, picking up another corner kick in the 68th minute. The Saints cleared the ball out of the box but not out of harm's way. Sasaki gathered the ball and dropped it to Drewery who was about 40 yards away from goal. He lobbed a cross right to Figurski Vieira at the 18-yard box. A great first touch from Figurski Vieira set him up well to bury his shot into the left side of the net to push the score to 4-1.

However, the Saints did not go away quietly picking up two unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes of play. UC would not allow them to find the equalizer, for the 4-3 UC victory.

Riveros' goal gives him eight goals in six games and Drewery's pair of assists marks the second time this season he has had multiple assists in a match. The two assists for Sasaki marks his first mulit-assist match of his career.

Before the game got under way UC honored their five seniors of Drewery, Hart, Alejandro Gonzalez Salinas, Brandon McDonald, and Enrique Pinanez who have had a 46-29-13 combined record in their careers.
