Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | UC Athletics

Late Game Rally Secures the Patriots the Win in Regular Season Finale

Marietta, GA – The Patriots went 81 minutes without scoring a goal and then rattled off three in a span of five minutes to defeat Life 3-2. The late game win gives UC seven straight victories which matches their longest regular season win streak since 2010.

A big contributor for Cumberlands in those seven games has been Rodrigo Riveros who has scored nine goals over that time, including one in this match. Also scoring for the Patriots were Stephen Appiah and Hrannar Magnusson. For Magnusson it marks the second straight game he has scored in.

Neither team got on the scoresheet in the opening half. UC led LU with shots on goal 3-1 but could not covert any in the opening 45 minutes.

The Running Eagles got on the scoreboard first, tallying a goal in the 59th minute of play. They had a corner kick on the right side where they sent a soaring ball to the six-yard box. An attacker headed it into the net to go up 1-0.

Goalkeeper Nathan Hart came up big for the Patriots in the 71st minute, stopping what would have given a cushion to Life's lead. The Running Eagles were on the attack and sent a low cross into the box. Their attacker took a touch and then fired a point blank shot that Hart saved from crossing the goal line.

In the 82nd minute, UC was able to net their first goal and tie the game. The Patriots were awarded a free kick near the sideline on the right side. Joel Drewery sent the ball to the middle of the six-yard box where Appiah chested the ball and then tapped it into the goal off his right foot.

UC wasted no time to take a lead of their own, just one minute later. This time they earned a corner kick on the left side. Liam Healey sent a perfectly weighted ball to Riveros who jumped up and headed it into the net for the 2-1, UC advantage.

However, Life answered back in the 86' with a header goal of their own off a cross from the left side to make the score level at 2-2.

Sticking true to how the game was being played out, UC found their go-ahead goal just two minutes later, once again off a free kick. With the ball almost to the end line on the right side, it was once again the captain, Drewery stepping to take it. He sent a ball on the ground to Magnusson who was crashing the goal, placing the ball in the too of the net away from Life's goalkeeper for the game winning goal.

Life had two more shots, but neither were on frame to give UC the 3-2 season finale victory. The win gives the Patriots a 7-1 record in the month of October for an overall regular season record of 9-4-3.

UC finishes in third in the Mid-South Conference from a MSC record of 8-2-1 securing them a first round bye in the tournament.

The Patriots will await their opponent for their game from the Campbellsville vs Shawnee State game. The Patriots have scheduled their quaterfinal matchup for November 5 with a time to be announced. The game will be at the UC Soccer Complex and live streamed on the UC Sports Network here.
