Williamsburg, KY- Playing in their 10th conference matchup of the year the Patriots beat the Saints to extend their win streak to six straight games with the 2-0 victory. Cumberlands now ranks tied for fifth in the NAIA with 10 shutouts on the season.
Jenna Rockwell and
Jayden Boelter both tallied goals in the match to give them both multiple goals on the week. With the goals, Rockwell has now scored in three straight matches for the Patriots while Boelter has also scored in three straight matches.
Laura Vogt was excellent in the cage for UC, earning her fourth shutout of the year. With the shutout, Cumberlands has now recorded six straight shutouts on the year as well. The six straight shutouts is the longest shutout streak in UC women's soccer history.
Throughout the first half, the Patriots controlled most of the possession. Through the first 45 minutes of play Cumberlands out-shot the Saints six to one, while forcing the Thomas More goalie to make one save.
In the 35
th minute Boelter got UC on the scoreboard. Boelter got a give-and-go pass from
Alba Lorca near the middle of the pitch. Lorca's pass was deflected by a Saints' defender but eventually rolled to the feet of Boelter. The Hebron, KY native beat three defenders before firing the shot into the lower left corner to give the Patriots the 1-0 lead.
Cumberlands took the 1-0 lead into the half. The possession in the second half stayed with UC as well. Over the course of 90 minutes, the Patriots out-shot the Saints 15 to 3, while also recording seven cornerkicks to Thomas More's two.
Cumberlands tallied their second goal of the game in the 72
nd minute off persistence offense.
Sarah Hammerstone lobbed a ball to Boelter who fired a one time shot just outside the six-yard box. Thomas More's goalkeeper had to make a diving save that she could not hold onto. Rockwell crashed the goal and buried the shot with her right foot to put UC up 2-0.
With her goal in the match, Boelter now moves into sixth all-time for a single season with 16 goals on the year. The freshman is currently averaging one goal a game for Cumberlands and will look to break into the top five in their next match of the season.
