Jackson, TN – Coming into today's match Freed-Hardeman had not lost a home contest for six matches, but (RV) Cumeberlands used consistent passing and constant attack to defeat the Lions 2-1. UC dominated every statistical category of the game including, shots 15-7, shots on goal 6-2 and corners 8-1.
Both
Rodrigo Riveros and
Liam Healey picked up goals in the game. The goals continue to leave Riveros as the season leader for UC with four and moves Healey tied for second with two.
From the moment the whistle blew, the Patriots were in control of the game. They recorded eight shots in the opening 23 minutes of play. The persistence of UC on the attack was awarded in the 25' with great team passing carrying the ball up the pitch.
Joel Drewery had the ball with pace and saw
Stephen Appiah out wide to the right in front of him. Drewery played Appiah the ball and he put the ball at the six-yard box where only Riveros could get to it, sliding for the ball. He kicked the ball into the net to give UC the 1-0 lead. The assist for Drewery gives him 35 career assists tying him for most all-time in program history.
Then just nine minutes later the Lions took advantage of their first opportunity on goal. Their attacker found the loose ball in the middle of the field and sent a left footed shot from outside the 18-yard box and into the net to draw the game level at 1-1. Riveros fired off more shot in the half, but the score remained tied heading into the second half.
The Patriots were once against resilient in their attack to start the second half and were rewarded for their efforts. They earned a corner kck on the left side and with the Lions frantic to clear the ball out, they committed a hand ball giving UC a penalty kick. Healey calmly stepped up to the ball and sent it to the left side of the goal to put Cumberlands up 2-1 in the 53rd minute of play.
UC stayed on the attack but could not earn another goal. The Patriots defense limited the Lions to just one more shot on goal, this one coming from a free kick. But goalkeeper
Nathan Hart was up for the challenge and kept the one goal advantage for the Pats in the 80
th minute.
Cumberlands held onto the 2-1 win for their second MSC victory of the season and ninth game overall decided by one goal or less. The Patriots improve to 3-4-3 on the season with a conference record of 2-2-1.
UC will stay in the Volunteer State for their next game on Saturday, October 9 against Bethel. The match is slated for an 8PM start with live stream available
