Patriots' Lockdown Defense Leaves Wildcats Scoreless

McKenzie, TN – A rematch of last season's Mid-South Conference Championship game between the Patriots and Wildcats did not disappoint in the evenly contested game and Cumberlands came out victorious once again. UC edged BU with the 1-0 win, noting back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Both teams had nine shots on goal with Bethel getting the edge in shots on goal 6-4, but only the Patriots earned a goal in the match.

For the second straight game Rodrigo Riveros and Liam Healey got their names on the scoresheet. Riveros has now scored in back-to-back contests and Healey added an assist in this game to his goal a match ago.

Riveros notched the only game of the game in the 32nd minute. The Patriots were awarded a corner kick and after it was unsuccessfully cleared out to Joel Drewery, who was looming unmarked, UC was once again on the attack. He played the ball out wide to Liam Healey who took on a defender, beating him inside. Healey played the ball to the edge of the box to Riveros. The striker cut the ball to his left foot and sent a curving rocket shot to the left side netting, giving the Patriots the 1-0 lead.

After UC had the goal lead, the Wildcats got on the attack more often. Their first shot of the game did not come until the 39th minute. The shot was a header from the top of the box, that Nathan Hart gathered easily, marking one of his three saves in the opening half.

Both offenses were quiet in the second half with UC having the only shot on goal through the first 25 minutes of the second half. The Patriots contained a Wildcat offense that averages just over 14 shots a game to less than ten in this game and shut them out for the just the third time this year.

Twice the Patriot backline came up with saves to preserve the win, both by Joachim Blomsterberg in the second half. Blomsterberg, Aleksandar Mirkovic, and Gabriel Figurski Vieira made the game difficult for the Wildcats attackers all night, keeping them away from the net and making it one of Bethel's least productive games of the year.

The Patriots improve their season record to 4-4-3 and MSC to 3-2-1.

Cumberlands will return to the UC Soccer Complex for a pair of games, beginning with a game against Pikeville on Tuesday, October 12 for a 7PM kick off. Live video will be streamed on the UC Sports Network here.
