Cumberlands Advances to the Quarterfinals of MSC Tournament with an 8-0 Win Over the Bears

Williamsburg, KY- In the opening round of the Mid-South Conference tournament, the sixth seeded Patriots scored six goals in the first half enroute to an 8-0 win the eleventh seed Pikeville. With the win, UC advances to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Cumberlands improves to 13-4-1 on the year, while the Bears conclude their season with a 4-13-0 record. During the match, the Patriots outshot the Bears 37-2.

UC was aggressive early on in the match, tallying their first shot just three minutes into the match. Cumberlands tallied their first goal in the sixth minute of the match. Selena Barnett sent a cross from the right corner of the field into the goalie box. The ball deflected off of a Pikeville defender and went across the goal line. The goal is considered an own goal by the Bears and gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead.

Not even two minutes later, UC tallied their second goal of the match. Barnett passed the ball back to Daniela Aguirre Garcia, who used two touches to cross the ball into the goalie box. The ball deflected off the head of a Pikeville defender and found a wide open Alanna Skinner. Skinner fired the ball into the back of the net to tally her first goal of the season.

Cumberlands continued to put pressure on the Bears defense. The Patriots tallied two goals in the 17' of the match and both goals came off the foot of Jenna Rockwell. The first goal was set up from UC's backline. Garcia passed the ball off to Rylee Hardley, who then sent a ball from the Patriots' defensive third up near the Pikeville goalie box towards a running Rockwell. Rockwell took control of the ball and fired a shot past the diving Bears goalie. Just 36 seconds later, Rockwell tallied the brace when she lofted a pass from Skinner over the head of the Pikeville goalie.

Rita Aguye Cots tallied her first goal of the season in the 19' of action. Cots sent a corner kick from the right side of the field and managed to curve the ball into the far corner of the net. In the 21' of action, Cumberlands tallied their sixth goal of the half. Madison Mirandilla sent a ball out wide to Barnett who managed to beat three Bears defenders to move the ball up the field. Barnett crossed the ball in to a running Mirandilla who used one touch to fire the ball into the back of the net. The six goals in the first half marks the most goals scored by Cumberlands in a single half since 2016 against Pikeville.

In the second half, UC continued their offensive pressure taking two shots and a corner kick over the first ten minutes of action. Despite firing several shots on goal within the second half, Cumberlands wasn't able to find the net again until the 78th minute of the match. Hardley sent a corner kick into the goalie box where Moa Widjeskog was able to connect with the cross and fired it into the back of the net. The goal marks the first goal of the season for Widjeskog and Hardley's second assist of the match.

The last Patriot goal came just four minutes later. Ryann Bryant and Hardley played give and go off of a corner kick that allowed Hardley to volley a ball towards the goal. Irene Medina connected with the ball and head it into the back of the net.

The 8-0 win marks the most goals scored by the Patriots in a single game since 2018 against Cincinnati Christian. With an assist in the match, Laura Navajas Marin moves into sole possession of second all-time for career assists.

Cumberlands advances to face off the third seeded Campbellsville in the quarterfinals of the MSC tournament. Kickoff at Finley Stadium in Campbellsville, KY is set for 6:30 PM on Friday, November 5. Live streaming of the match can be found here.
