Cumberlands Close Out Bulldogs Invite Strong To Tally Team Win

The depth of the sixth-ranked UC women's swimming & diving team was on full display Sunday as the Patriots posted a pair of wins and 16 NAIA national standards on the final day of competition at the Bulldogs Invite.  Cumberlands recorded 1,498 points to win the overall meet by over 400 points. 

Maria Basto continued her incredible meet as she notched a career-best time of 2:04.91 to win the 200 back.   That time is the fifth fastest time in program history and the fourth fastest time in the NAIA this season.  This capped off a mid-season meet, where the sophomore notched three individual wins, broke one school record, and is ranked in the top five of the NAIA in all three events.

Teammate Liberty Poley notched a provisional cut after touching the wall in 2:12.61 to place fourth. Emilia Martinez Morales and Izzy Jackson tallied times of 2:17.05 and 2:19.09, respectively.

The finals session opened with a trio of Patriots competing in the 1650 free.  Elise Weiler led the charge going 18:46.91 to place fifth in the event.  That time ranks her 11th in the NAIA, while Jami Margolen (19:30.13) and Elle Hays (19:40.33) finished seventh and ninth, respectively.

Cumberlands depth was on full display in the 100 free as eight Patriots clipped the NAIA provisional standard.  Anastasiia Shatalova used a strong close to out touch the field and clock a 53.04 to finish runner-up. Hanne te Velthuis clocked a 53:11 to finish one spot back, while Ali Pecore went 54.19 to place fifth in the event.  Shatalova and te Velthuis finishes are ranked third and fifth in the NAIA. 

Austyn Crawford (54.72) and Leah Thomas (55.28) both posted top-ten finishes in the event.  Also clipping the NAIA cut were Rebecca Loftus (55.16), Riley Cerquiera (55.60), and Holly Gabriel (55.28).

A trio of Patriots posted top-five finishes in the 200 breast.  Izzy Cooksey dropped two seconds off of her prelims time to clock a 2:29.42 for a third place finish.  Ashley Shoenlein clocked a 2:32.01 to finish fourth, while Alli Lovell placed fifth with a time of 2:36.13.

In the final individual event, Sara Overly went 2:17.73 in the prelims to hold the top seed before clocking a 2:18.27 in the finals.  Aurora Stavoy also notched the NAIA provisional cut in the event after touching the wall in 2:19.08.

Cumberlands closed out the meet with Basto, Shatalova, Pecore, and te Velthuis teaming up to go 3:33.03 to win the 400 free relay.  That time is the third fastest time in the NAIA this season. 

UC will return to the water Saturday, December 4th, when they travel to face Midway in a dual meet. This meet is set to begin at 1 p.m. and will serve as Cumberlands final competition of the 2021 portion of their schedule.
