Strong Fourth Quarter Helps Patriots Soar Past Eagles

Williamsburg, KY – Abbi Douglas converted 11 of her team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter as UC women's basketball pulled away from Alice Lloyd 76-68 Saturday afternoon on Randy Vernon Court.  With the win UC improves to 4-0 on the season, while the Eagles move to 3-2 overall.

Douglas tied her career-high with 21 points to go along with four steals, while Destiny Haworth finished with 20 points and three assists.  Lillie Hall and Channing Lewis tallied 14 and 12 points, respectfully.  Lewis also finished tied with Douglas for the team-lead in rebounds with six apiece.  Reagan Begole played some key minutes for the Patriots down the stretch and tallied four rebounds, four assists, and three steals in the win.

Cumberlands opened the game on a 7-2 run that including back-to-back layups from Hall to take control early.  Alice Lloyd evened the score midway through the first quarter before Jaiden Cox found Whitney Caldwell for a bucket to put the Patriots in front 9-7 with 5:39 remaining.  A couple minutes later, Lewis drained a three as Begole added a layup to give UC a 14-9 advantage.  After the game was tied twice, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to take the lead, however a Haworth layup in the final seconds cut UC's deficit to 22-18.

The two teams traded baskets to open the second quarter until Haworth drained on of her four three's in the game to even the score at 26-26 with 5:23 remaining in the second quarter.  Just over a minute later, the Maryville, TN native, put UC in front with another three-pointer.  The Eagles answered with a bucket, however, Cumberlands converted 5-6 from the charity stripe to even the score at 34-34 heading into halftime.

UC picked up the pressure in the second half as Douglas notched a steal and found Hall for a three-point to open the third quarter.  The game saw four lead changes over the next three minutes, until Lewis hit a jumper, which was followed by a Haworth three to put UC in front 46-42 midway through the period. After Alice Llyod evened the score at 46-46, Hall drove and converted the three-point play to give UC a 49-46 edge.  Douglas added a three-point play as well but six straight free throws from the Eagles give Alice Lloyd a 54-52 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles extended their lead to 57-52 just over a minute into the fourth quarter.  Lewis dished out an assist to Shelby Moore before converting a three-point play to tie the game at 57-57 with 8:00 minutes remaining.  The game was even three times over the next several minutes with the last one coming at the 4:44 mark. From that point UC took control of the game as Douglas and Haworth each hit from beyond-the-arc, while Douglas added a layup to cap of an 8-0 run and give UC a 71-63 advantage with 2:21 remaining.  Douglas went 4-4 from the free throw line, as Haworth converted one as well for the 76-68 final. 

Cumberlands returns to action Tuesday, November 9, when they hit the road for the first time this season.  UC heads to Richmond, IN to face IU East with a 7 p.m. tip-off.  Live video of the game is available here and live stats are available here (XML).
