Strong Third Quarter Propels Patriots to Road Win Over Running Eagles

Marietta, GA – UC freshman trio of Sydney Dalton, Kassie Monday, and Kaylie Monday combined for 35 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists as the Patriots recorded their first road win of the season with a 72-55 win over Life Saturday afternoon.  Cumberlands outscored the Running Eagles 27-12 in the third quarter to help them improve to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Kassie Monday led the way for UC with a game-high 21 points to go along with four rebounds.  It was her second 20+ point performance of the conference season.  Dalton netted a career-high 13 points, while it's the fourth time this season the Mt. Juliet, TN native has grabbed six rebounds in a game.   Kaylie Monday chipped in 11 points as Destiny Haworth went a perfect 3-3 from long range and added three assists in the win.

Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm early as neither team hit a field goal in the first three minutes of action.  UC took their first lead of the game as Channing Lewis drove towards the basket and kicked it out to Destiny Haworth for a three.  On the next Patriots possession Kassie Monday added a layup to extend their lead to 5-2 with 6:21 remaining in the first quarter.  Coming out of the media timeout, Kassie Monday drained a three-pointer, which Abbi Douglas followed up with a layup to extend UC's lead to 10-7 with 2:20 remaining.  In the closing seconds of the quarter, Lewis drained a three-pointer to give the Patriots a 13-9 edge.

Life opened the second quarter with four straight points to even the score at 13-13.  However, Kassie Monday drained a three, which sparked a 14-2 Patriots run, that spanned three minutes to take a 27-15 lead with 6:11 remaining.  That run featured nine points from the duo of Lillie Hall and Sydney Dalton to keep UC in front.  From that point, Cumberlands shooting went cold as they were outscored 15-4 with the Patriots four points coming from the charity stripe.  Hall converted a pair of free throws in the closing seconds of the half to give Cumberlands a 31-30 advantage heading into the break.

The second half started off slow, before a Patriots timeout kick-started their offense as Lewis converted a layup at the 8:25 mark to extend UC lead to 33-30. Kaylie Monday added a pair of layups coupled with a Haworth three extend Cumberlands lead to 40-32 with 6:23 remaining.  Monday's hot shooting continued as she added a three-pointer, which gave her seven points in the quarter.  Dalton and Kassie Monday combined to netted the final 16 Patriots points of the third quarter as part of a 16-6 UC run to close out the period with UC taking a 58-42 lead into the fourth.

Cumberlands strong performance continued in the fourth quarter as they opened on a 7-0 run.  Haworth connected with Douglas and Lewis for buckets before Kassie Monday hit from long range to extend the lead to 65-42 just over a minute into the quarter.  The Running Eagles went on an 8-2 run, however, UC answered as Haworth connected with her third deep ball of game to make it 70-50 with 2:56 left.  Kassie Monday capped off her night with a steal and layup while Life netted the final five points of the game for the 72-55 final.

The Patriots shot 45.0% from the field and outrebounded the Running Eagles 40-36.

UC will return to the court Monday, December 6, when they host Wilberforce on Randy Vernon Court.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. with live stats available here and live video available here.
