Consistent Scoring and Tight Defense Give Patriots The Senior Night Win

Williamsburg, KY - Consistent scoring from both the floor and the charity stripe let the (RV) Cumberlands women's basketball team walk away with the senior-night win at 67-51 against Cumberland University on Saturday afternoon. Following the win, UC improves to 14-4 overall and 10-4 in the MSC.

Leading all Patriot scorers was Vilma Covane with 19 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Silvia Veloso also contributed 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals, while Abbi Douglas chipped in 11 points, four steals, and three boards.

The first quarter started well for the Patriots as they went on a 6-0 run highlighted by a Reagan Begole bucket and a made free throw by Douglas to take the lead midway through the first quarter. However, Cumberland continued to battle back with a 5-0 run of their own to make the score 6-5 with 4:05 remaining in the first quarter. The following possession, V. Covane was able to secure an offensive board and convert an "and-one" to put UC up 9-5 with 3:47 remaining. During the last three minutes of the quarter, both teams continued to exchange buckets until Addison Wilson was able to close the quarter out with a pair of free throws to widen the Cumberlands lead to 18-10.

UC kept the pressure on Cumberland through the first three minutes of the second quarter as they enlarged their lead to 26-13 with a bank shot from Veloso. After a series of Patriot turnovers, Cumberland would go on a 9-0 run that cut the UC lead to 26-22 with 4:34 remaining in the first half. Three minutes later, Veloso was able to conjure up some transition offense with a layup following a beautiful pass made by Begole to put Cumberlands out front 36-27 with 1:35 remaining. UC would go on to not score for the rest of the quarter, but the Patriots maintained their lead at 36-30 going into halftime.

On the opening play of the second half, Douglas managed to thread the needle to V. Covane for another basket that grew the Patriots lead to 38-30 with 9:46 remaining. UC struggled to score over the course of the next five minutes until the drought was ended by Carla Covane with a mid-range jumper to make the Patriot lead 41-36 with 4:47 left in the third. Cumberlands kept their foot on the gas for the remainder of the third as they embarked on a 13-2 run with a deep ball and free throws made by Channing Lewis and Veloso to extend the UC lead to 54-38 going into the fourth quarter.

The beginning of the fourth quarter did not go well for Cumberlands as they went scoreless for the first three minutes until Veloso bagged another pair of free throws to sustain the Patriot lead at 56-44 with 6:40 left in the game. Cumberland attempted to make a comeback in the final minutes but was thwarted as UC continued to make shots with Douglas bagging back-to-buckets to end the game. The final score on Randy Vernon court was 67-51 with the Patriots walking away with the win.

The Patriots will return to the court Monday, February 15, when they host Life University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. with live stats available here and live video available here.
