Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | UC Athletics

Cumberlands Improves to 5-0 After Shutting Out Life, 3-0

3Williamsburg, KY – The UC women's soccer team had their foot on the gas pedal all game putting up 27 shots in their 3-0 win over the Life Running Eagles. The Patriots are now 5-0, their best start since 2018 when the team started 7-0 before their first loss.

Cumberlands came out of the game firing with Sarah Hammerstone leading the charge. Hammerstone had two shots on frame in the first ten minutes of action, but both were saved by the Life goalkeeper. Hammerstone's persistence in front of goal did pay off in the 16' to give UC the 1-0 lead early on. Selena Barnett was running down the right flank where she sent a ball into the box. Hammerstone was racing in front of goal to knock the ball in for the goal.

Despite a total of 14 shots in the first half for UC they would not score another goal in the first 45 minutes of play. Life would not get a shot off in the first half or the entire contest thanks to stellar defense by the Patriots' backline. Laura Vogt does record her third shutout of the season and even though she did have to stop any shots she was active for Cumberlands playing plenty of balls out of the back.

Shara Randez earned a pair of goals in the match, her second multi-goal game of the season. Her first goal came in the 62nd minute of play. A loose ball fell to the feet of Randez who was 30 yards out from the goal. The distance did not phase the Alfaro, Spain native who launched a shot making contact with the upper side netting to give UC the 2-0 lead.

Randez's second goal of the day came just 17 minutes later from a chip shot. Laura Navajas Marin used her craft to cut through would be defenders. She saw Randez making a run towards the box and fed her the through ball. Randez realized the goalkeeper was off her line and chipped in the ball to increase UC's lead to 3-0.

This marks back-to-back seasons that the Patriots defeat the Running Eagles to open up Mid-South Conference play. This year, Life was undefeated entering the contest with UC handing them their first loss of the season to fall to 4-1-1.

Cumberlands will continue MSC play when they travel to Campbellsville next Sunday, February 21 at 2 PM. Live stats will be available here with a live stream here.
