Williamsburg, KY - The Patriots men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Campbellsville on Saturday at the UC Soccer Complex. Despite outshooting the Tigers, the loss gives UC a 1-1 record in Mid-South Conference play.
In the game, the Patriots recorded six shots on frame to just three for Campbellsville but couldn't get anything on the board. In the 10
th minute, Patriots attacker
Rodrigo Riveros found enough room in the middle of the field to get a clean shot away. Campbellsville goalkeeper Jeremi Campagnolo was forced to dive to his right and make the first save of the game. Riveros let the ball fly from about 25-yards out.
A few minutes later,
Sergio Infantes Castell came inches away from giving UC the lead. Infantes Castell rang the ball off of the right goalpost from 20-yards out as he found daylight between two Campbellsville defenders.
In the 25
th minute, Cumberlands kept up the pressure.
Liam Healey took a beautiful pass in a prime scoring location and one-timed the ball off the crossbar behind a frozen Campagnolo. Healey stepped into the shot with his right foot from just outside the 18-yard box, with no defenders in-sight. The chance was just one of multiple opportunities for the Patriots in the first half.
Campbellsville tested UC goalkeeper
Akililu Zambataro in the 31
st minute from point-blank range. Sebastiano Musu took a through ball and one-timed it high and over the net from just 5-yards out. On the play, Zambataro rushed out of his net to cut down the angle and forced the missed shot from Musu.
After the teams traded opportunities at both ends, Campbellsville again, found themselves on the attack. In the final minute of the first half and with the sun in his eyes, Zambataro snagged an absolute strike from 30-yards out. The kick came off the right foot of Eleder Goicoechea who had no other option but to let it fly from the middle of the pitch.
The first half proved to be a defensive battled with the two evenly matched clubs heading to the break nodded at 0-0. During the first half, both teams recorded three shots on net with Campbellsville directing eight shots towards the target and for the Patriots, six.
Early in the second half, the Tigers took control. In the 6
th minute, Tom Edge got free and rang the ball off of the crossbar behind Zambataro. Fortunately for Cumberlands, the ball deflected away from danger. A few moments later, a defensive miscue by the Patriots led to the Tigers goal giving Campbellsville a 1-0 lead.
The Patriots attempted to answer right back. Just a minute after the Campbellsville goal, Infantes Castell was stopped by Campagnolo on a sharp-angle kick. The threat came from the right side of the 18-yard box and led to a UC corner kick. Infantes Castell also took the corner, but nothing came of the opportunity.
UC kept the pressure up in search of the tying goal. In the 62
nd minute,
Tommaso Ogliari was positioned way out on the left side of the field when he decided to cross the ball into the Campbellsville box.
Gabriel Figurski was standing on the right side of net and flung a header just wide of the cage from 5-yards out.
In the 85
th minute, UC made one last push to try and tie it up. Infantes Castell sent a high corner kick across the box to Figurski who was denied by a diving Campagnolo. Campbellsville would hang onto the lead and take the game, 1-0.
