Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Balanced Scoring Leads #5 Patriots to Home Opening Win

Williamsburg, KY – A season-high ten different Patriots scored at least one goal as the fifth-ranked UC men's lacrosse team defeated St. Andrews 16-10 Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  With the win, UC improves to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in AAC play, while the Knights move to 1-1 and 1-1 in conference play.

Dylan Crouch led the way for the Patriots with four goals and five points while scooping seven ground balls.  Dawson Coltran netted a hat trick, while Tanner Popovich dished out three assists in his Patriot debut.  Two seniors, Dalton Smith and Alex Heckler chipped in two points apiece.

Defensively Cumberlands was led by Jake Morgan, who notched seven caused turnovers and 11 ground balls in the game.  In his first start, Connor Owens made 13 saves to earn the win.  Jayvon Jamison went 13-21 on faceoffs with four ground balls, while Chrystian Coleman scooped five ground balls.

St. Andrews struck first netting a goal in the first minute of action to take an early lead.  UC responded a couple of minutes later as Popovich connected with Crouch for a goal to even the score at 1-1. The Patriots took advantage of a Knights penalty as Popovich found Coltran, who put a well-placed shot into the upper corner of the cage for a man-up goal to give UC a 2-1 edge.  Coltran extended the lead for UC, this from a pass from Heckler to put the Patriots ahead 3-1 after the opening period.

The second quarter opened similar to the first as the Knights scored a goal within the opening minute of the period to cut the lead to 3-2.  St. Andrews looked for the equalizer, however, three straight saves by Owens kept them off the board, while on the other side Coltran completed his first career hat trick to extend the lead to 4-2 with 10:10 remaining.  UC won the ensuing faceoff and on the Patriots possession, Chrystian Coleman found Heckler, who had a one-on-one for the goal.  The Knights scored three unanswered goals to even the score at 5-5 with 3:38 remaining.  The Patriots responded quickly as Smith split the defense and fired a shot into the lower right corner of the cage putting UC back in front 6-5.  Both teams had opportunities in the final two minutes but neither could convert sending the game into the break with Cumberlands leading 6-5.

Cumberlands came out with a strong third quarter outscoring the Knights 5-2 in the period.   Nick Anderson won the opening faceoff and on the ensuing possession, Crouch wrapped around the cage and netted a goal to extend the lead to 7-5.  The two teams traded goals, before Crouch netted his third goal of the quarter, noting his first hat trick of the season.  Jamison won the ensuing faceoff, scooped the ground ball behind the defensive and fired a shot past the goalie for his first collegiate goal of his career.  The two teams traded goals to close out the quarter as Cumberlands took a 12-7 lead into the fourth quarter.

Christian Vanover responded to a Knights goal that opened the fourth quarter with a goal of his own making it 13-8 two minutes in.  The two teams traded goals twice, before Matthew Cessna connected with the back of the cage for his second goal of the season.  The Patriots had a couple of other opportunities but couldn't convert for the 16-10 final.

Cumberlands will return to the field Monday, March 1, when they travel to Fort Wayne, IN to face sixth-ranked Indiana Tech.  The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. with live video available here and live stats available here.
