Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Balanced Attack Leads Second-Ranked Patriots to Season Opening Win

Wilmore, KY  - The second-ranked UC women's lacrosse team had eight different players net at least one goal as the Patriots defeated Asbury 22-4 Thursday afternoon at the Eagles Lacrosse Field.  Cumberlands improves to 6-0 in season-openers in program history and extends their win streak to nine straight.

Jaclyn Berry led the Patriots attack with a game-high eight goals and 11 points.  Rachel Leigh netted a career-high four goals while Emily Heim and Bella Ricchiazzi finished with three goals apiece.  Heim also dished out three assists and scooped a team-high eight draw controls.

Defensively, Olivia McCarrell made six saves in her first career start to earn the win.  Berry and Reegan Hensley led UC with two caused turnovers each, while Ricchiazzi tallied a team-best three ground balls in the win.

Asbury struck first, however, the Patriots responded quickly as Heim found Berry cutting towards the cage for a transition goal to even the score at 1-1.  The two teams traded goals, before Heim scooped four consecutive draw controls as Cumberlands converted them into four goals within a 45 second stretch to give UC a 6-2 lead with 23:17 remaining.  Asbury looked to cut into the lead, however, McCarrell stopped an Ashley Byrd shot to keep the score 6-2 until Florence Andrieu scooped a ground ball off a missed shot and put in home to give the Patriots an 7-2 edge.  Cumberlands added seven unanswered goals, including three goals from Berry and Leigh to make it 14-2 with 6:24 remaining in the first half.  A couple minutes later, Heim dodged towards the cage and fired a well-placed shot towards the cage for a goal to make it 15-2.

That goal was the 100th of Heim's career as she becomes just the fourth Patriot in program history to surpass that milestone.  She is one goal away from moving into third place on UC's all-time goals list.

The second half began similar to the first with the Eagles striking first.  UC responded less than a minute later as Berry converted a man-up free-position attempt to make it 16-3 four minutes into the half.  On the next Patriots possession, Heim found Stephanie Meyer in front of the cage for her first goal of the season.  The two teams traded goals, before the Patriots netted four unanswered goals for the 22-4 final.  Carolina Johnson recorded a man-down goal, while Tasie Fox netted her first collegiate goal of her career as part of that stretch.

Cumberlands will return to the field tomorrow as they return home to host sixth-ranked Lawrence Tech.  The game is slated for 3 p.m. with live stats available here and live video available here.
