Box Score Williamsburg, KY – Bella Ricchiazzi and
Jaclyn Berry combined for nine goals and 14 points as the second-ranked UC women's lacrosse team defeated sixth-ranked Lawrence Tech Friday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. Cumberlands improves to 2-0 on the season and extends their win streak to 10 straight games.
Ricchiazzi led the way for UC with six goals, eight points, and four draw controls, while Berry added three goals and three assists in the win.
Emily Heim chipped in two goals and four draw controls. Defensively,
Olivia McCarrell had a career day with nine saves, four caused turnovers and six ground balls.
Trinity Brown added four caused turnovers and three ground balls in the win.
It was a defensive battle right from the opening draw as the two teams combined for four turnovers in the first three minutes. UC struck first as Berry made a quick pass to Ricchiazzi in front of the cage for a goal to make it 1-0. Emily added a free position goal, before back-to-back Blue Devils goals evened the score at 2-2 with 14:00 remaining in the first half. Ricchiazzi put the Patriots back in front with a goal less than a minute later. Ricchiazzi won the draw control and on the ensuing possession she connected with Berry for a goal giving UC a 4-2 lead. Cumberlands extend their lead minutes later as Ricchiazzi netted a man-up goal to make it 5-2 with 8:35 remaining. Lawrence Tech looked to cut into the lead, however, five saves by McCarrell kept the score 5-2 heading into the break.
The Blue Devils came out strong in the second half netting a goal 37 second in. Cumberlands responded with back-to-back goals from
Rachel Leigh and Ricchiazzi giving the Patriots their largest lead of the game, 7-3, with 26:33 remaining. Lawrence Tech tallied three straight goals, before Ricchiazzi converted on a free position attempt to make it 8-6 with 17:38 left. Three minutes later, Berry fended off a double-team and found Heim cutting down the middle of the field for a goal to give UC the 9-6 advantage. Lawrence Tech recorded three of the next four goals to cut the lead to 10-9 with 9:20 remaining. Minutes later
Stephanie Meyer forced a Blue Devil turnover and on the ensuing possession Ricchiazzi added an unassisted goal to give Cumberlands a two goal advantage. The two teams traded goals in the final minutes, as the Patriots defense force three Lawrence Tech turnovers for the 12-10 final.
The Patriots have now won 20 straight home contest dating back to the 2018 season.
Cumberlands will return to the field Friday, March 5, when they host (RV) Ave Maria. The game is slated for 7 p.m. with live stats available
