Williamsburg, KY - Behind goals from
Sergio Infantes Castell and
Marco Muca, the Patriots men's soccer team defeated Cumberland University 2-0, on Sunday in Williamsburg. The win gives Cumberlands back-to-back wins over the Phoenix and a 2-1-1 record in Mid-South Conference play.
Infantes Castell's goal gives him a share of the team lead with two while Muca tallied his first career Patriot goal in Sunday's win.
Akililu Zambataro made three saves and picked up the shutout. The performance gives Zambataro shutouts in back-to-back games and eight in his career.
Zambataro was called upon early in the first half. In the 10' a Cumberland midfielder sent a dangerous cross into the UC box. A Phoenix attacker was waiting for the pass and used their left foot to direct a shot to the upper corner of the net. Zambataro was forced to lunge to his right and tip the ball off of the crossbar. Fortunately for UC, the ball never crossed the goal line and was cleared out of danger by a defender. The game stayed tied at zero.
A few minutes later,
Tommaso Ogliari found himself open outside the Phoenix 18-yard box. Ogliari sent a booming kick off of the cross bar behind a diving CU goalkeeper. The ball bounced off of the bar and right onto the foot of
Alejandro Gonzalez who was positioned at the edge of the box. In one motion, Gonzalez one-timed an absolute strike towards the CU net, but it was stopped by the Phoenix netminder. The game remained scoreless heading into the half.
The Patriots offense struck early during the second half. In the 63
' Infantes Castell was hauled down while making a quick move on the right edge of the Phoenix 18-yard box. The CU foul led to a free kick opportunity. Infantes Castell used his right foot to send a curving shot around a wall of defenders and past the Cumberland goalie to give UC a 1-0 lead. The goal puts Infantes Castell in a tie for the team lead with Gonzalez with two.
In the 77
th minute, Zambataro made a big save off of a dangerous Cumberland attack. After just checking into the game, CU attacker Daniel Picken got loose in the middle of the field and just on the edge of Patriots 18-yard box. Picken sent an absolute rocket on the net but it was stopped by a kneeling Zambataro. Zambataro had positioned himself perfectly on his 6-yard box and used both hands to trap the ball and make the save.
With the time winding down, and despite being down a man, the Patriots added to their lead. The Phoenix, in a last-ditch effort, sent their goalkeeper all the way up the field to try and tie the game. Muca made a fine defensive play to steal the ball from a Cumberland attacker and clear it into Phoenix territory. Once Muca noticed that there was no one back defensively, he sprinted down the field and tapped the ball into an empty net. Muca's goal came in the final minute of play. UC killed off the remaining time and held on for a 2-0 win.
