Five Different Goal Scorers Push UC Past the Grizzlies, 5-1

Lawrenceville, GA – Despite going down 1-0 early, #18 UC fought back to dominate #19 Georgia Gwinnett, 5-1. The win gives the Patriots their third win in a row, marking the third straight year UC has started the season 3-0. The game was the first match for the Grizzlies this season and marks their first season opener loss since 2017.

The game started out as all Georgia Gwinnett, with their team firing off four shots on goal in the first six minutes. Laura Vogt and her defense made two saves from point blank range following a defensive miscue. The pressure from the Grizzlies would prove to be too much when they scored a goal in the 6' of play from a cross off the right flank, UC's first goal against this season.

After the goal from Georgia Gwinnett, UC settled into the match both defensively and offensively. The Patriots would give up just one more shot the rest of the game while shooting 12 of their own, seven on frame.

Jayden Boelter got the scoring going for Cumnberlands in the 38' notching her first career goal. Jillian Zurborg found Ainhoa Camara racing down the left end line. Camara crossed the ball into the six-yard box where Boelter headed it into goal.

For the first time since October 9, 2018 vs Shawnee State, Jenna Rockwell netted a goal for the Patriots. Boelter lined up to take a corner kick just before halftime in the 43'. She was able to find 5'11", Rockwell just in front of the net, knocking the ball in with her head. UC now led the Grizzlies 2-1 at the half.

The Patriots did not let up on the offensive end, getting a goal 11 minutes into the second half. UC was awarded another corner kick; one of three they would get in the final 45 minutes of action. Boelter again sent another soaring ball into the box, this time finding Camara in front of net, who one touched it past the keeper.

UC's top goal-scorer on the year would not be left on the score sheet in this match. Shara Randez netted her fourth goal of the season off a one touch pass from Camara. Randez ended up one-vs-one with the keeper and buried the ball into the back of the net to have the Patriots go up 4-1 in the 63rd minute of play.

Micha Harris also found herself with herself one-on-one with the keeper. She kept her composure and kicked the ball in with her left foot to score her first goal of the season and UC's season high fifth goal of the match.

UC now has two top-25 matchup victories after they defeated #25 Columbia 2-0 earlier this season.

Cumberlands will stay in Lawrenceville, GA for their neutral match against the University of South Carolina Beaufort tomorrow, Saturday February 6 at 4pm. There is no livestream but live stats can be found here.
