Williamsburg, KY – Despite numerous great offensive runs throughout all three sets, the UC women's volleyball team fell to the Bethel Wildcats 0-3 (18-25, 21-25, 21-25) on Friday evening. Following the loss, the Patriots to 3-8 overall and 2-5 in MSC play.
For her fourth match in a row, Lily Chapman led all hitters for Cumberlands as she tallied nine to go with her 11 digs. Savanah Schwarz, once again, led the team in assists with 16 to accompany six digs, while Ashley Sobocinski snagged six kills with three digs.
Chapman got things for going for the Patriots in the first set as she capped off a 3-0 run with a monster kill to give Cumberlands the advantage. Emily Prewitt was next up for UC as she connected with Schwarz for an assist/kill combo to extend the Patriots lead to 5-2. Jennifer Stein continued to keep the pressure on the Wildcats as she posted back-to-back service aces to widen the UC lead to 9-3. The two teams went on to trade points for the majority of the first set until Prewitt hammered down another kill to keep Cumberlands in front at 16-11. Neverthless, the rest of the set was all Wildcats as they posted a 14-2 run to take the first set at 25-18 and go up 1-0 on the match.
The Patriots would go on to drop the second set at 21-25 and go down 0-2 on the match, but gave the Wildcats a run for their money in the third set. Once again, Chapman would highlight the 4-1 run at the start of the set for UC as Schwarz gave her a beautiful set for another assist/kill combo. Sobocinski resumed her solid night for Cumberlands as she notched a kill to keep the Patriots lead at 7-6. Following a series of UC subs, the Wildcats would go on a 3-0 run of their own to overtake the set lead at 14-11. However, the Patriots would not go down quietly as Olivia Verdecchia slammed a kill through the Wildcats defense to cut the deficit to 16-17. A few possessions later, the Schwarz assist for a Chapman kill came into effect again on back-to-back possessions that minimized the Wildcats lead to just 19-22. Although, the UC effort would not be enough as a Hannah McGowan kill ended the third with the score sitting at 21-25, which allowed the Wildcats to take the match with a 3-0 win.
The Patriots will return to the court on Saturday, March 13 to take on Georgetown University in Williamsburg, KY. First serve is set for 6:00 PM.
