Fast Starts Propels Patriots Past (RV) Gray Wolves

Williamsburg, KY – The (RV) UC men's lacrosse team got five points from both Thomas Fogarty and Dylan Crouch to lead the Patriots to an 11-7 win over (RV) Lourdes Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  It was UC's third straight game against a team mention in the NAIA Top 10 Poll as the Patriots move to 2-4 on the season.

Crouch led the way with four goals and an assist, while Fogarty tallied two goals, three assists, and five ground balls in the game.  Tanner Popovich chipped in three points, while both Christian Vanover and Stephen Popovich added a goal and an assist.

Jake Morgan led the Patriots backline with 14 ground balls and six caused turnovers.  Michael Toohey made eight saves in the win.

Cumberlands got off to a fast start as Fogarty put a well-placed shot past the keeper to give UC a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the first quarter.  Lourdes evened the score before Stephen Popovich dodge through the Gray Wolves defense for a transition goal to put UC back in front 2-1.  Two minutes later, Crouch forced a turnover, scooped the ground ball, and connected with Vanover for the goal to make it 3-1 in favor of the Patriots. Morgan added a caused turnover, while Toohey made a save in the final seconds to keep UC in front 3-1 after the first quarter.

The Patriots opened the second quarter with consecutive goals from Fogarty and Tanner Popovich to extend their lead to 5-1 with 9:03 remaining.  The score remained that way until the 4:08 mark as Jacob Bush forced a Lourdes turnover, Morgan scooped up the ground ball and on the ensuing transition Vanover connected with Crouch for the goal to make it 6-1.  The two teams traded goals in the final minutes of the quarter to give the Patriots a 7-2 lead at the break.

UC looked to extend their lead in the third quarter as a Toohey save led to a transition goal for the Patriots as Crouch finished it off on the other end to give Cumberlands an 8-1 advantage.  Lourdes scored three unanswered goals to close out the quarter to cut the Patriots lead to 8-5 heading into the fourth.

Midway through the fourth quarter the Gray Wolves cut the led to 8-6, however, Cumberlands responded quickly as Fogarty found Crouch once again for a goal with 7:38 remaining.  Two minutes later, UC took advantage of a Lourdes penalty as Dawson Coltran netted the man-up goal to make it 10-6 with 5:21 left.  The two teams traded goals in the final minutes for the 11-7 final.

Cumberlands will return to the field Wednesday, March 17, when they travel to West Point, GA to face the Skyhawks. The game is slated to begin at 5 p.m. with live video available here and live stats available here.
