Portsmouth, OH – Cumberlands picked up their third straight victory by defeating the Shawnee State Bears 4-0, this also marks their ninth shutout of the season. UC put a stop to SSU's two game win streak and shut them out for the first time in four games this season.
Two of the four goals came from
Ainhoa Camara, marking her second multi-goal game of the season and puts her season goal total at nine.
The Patriots controlled the game early on getting two corner kicks in the first four minutes of play. The high pressure on the Shawnee State defense led to the eventual first goal of the game.
After playing the ball out of the back,
Laura Navajas Marin passed a ball out to
Selena Barnett on the right side of the 18-yard box. She sent a ball to Camara at the center of the field, who shot the ball into the back of the net with her first touch. Cumberlands had the 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the contest.
UC created a number of chances to add to their lead in the first half with 19 shots, 10 of them on frame, but they could not push any across the goal line.
Laura Vogt kept the Bears from tying the game. In the 14' Vogt came up with a save pushing the ball out of harms way and the Bears off the scoreboard.
The start of the second half was once again dominated by the Patriots. A minute into the half, Camara sent a ball into the box that bounced to
Jayden Boelter. She settled the ball down and made space between her defender firing the ball past the keeper into the net.
In the 51
st minute it would be Boelter assisting Camara's second goal of the game.
Shara Randez sent a ball through to Boelter on the left flank. Boelter played a beautiful cross into Camara on the back post who headed it into the goal to give UC the 3-0 advantage.
The Bears would also have their chances in the match, but solid defending from the Patriots held them scoreless. The Bears had six shots on goal and their best chance came from one of their corner kicks in the 63rd minute. The ball was sent into a Shawnee State attacker who headed the ball toward Vogt but she held her ground and sent the ball out of the box to end the attack.
Navajas Marin laid a ball of Randez at the top of the 18-yard box. Rather then taking the quick shot, Randez tapped the ball past the defender into the box and with the created space she shot the ball into the upper net to make it 4-0. The goal marks the 35
th of her career moving her into fifth all-time in program history.
Cumberlands now improves to 12-1 on the season and 8-1 in Mid-South Conference play with just two games remaining in the regular season. The Patriots will host their final regular season home game at the UC Soccer Complex on Sunday March 21 at 5:30 PM. Live stats for the game can be found
