Williamsburg, KY- A pair of first half goals for
Ainhoa Camara lifted #8 Cumberlands to a 6-0 route of Georgetown College on Sunday in Williamsburg. The win extends the Patriots win-streak to five games and also gives them five straight shutouts.
Scoring for UC were Camara,
Shara Randez,
Jayden Boelter,
Moa Widjeskog, and
Sarah Hammerstone. On the defensive end, both
Laura Vogt and
Briley Fillenwarth saw action in net for Cumberlands with Fillenwarth making two saves in the win.
The Patriots got their offense firing early in the first half with three goals in the first ten minutes. In the 5' Lauren Navajas Marin launched a perfect corner kick right into the middle of the Georgetown defensive box. Camara backed away from the crowd and used her head to notch the ball past the Tigers goalkeeper to give UC an early lead.
Just four minutes later, Randez found some room in the middle of the field and well outside of the Georgetown defensive box. Randez used her right foot and sent a rocket to the upper left-hand corner of the cage. The strike gives Randez goals in five straight games for the Patriots.
Less than a minute later,
Jillian Zurborg was on the Tigers baseline when she sent a cross into a dangerous area in the Tigers 18-yard box. Boelter beat her defender and placed the ball into the corner of the net, behind a diving Georgetown goalie. The marker gave Cumberlands a 3-0 lead with still 35 minutes left to play in the first half.
UC added to their lead with two more goals in the late stages of the first half. In the 24' Camara got free in the box and sent a kick right off of the crossbar. The ball bounced to the left side of the Tigers net where Navajas sent a cross immediately back into the Georgetown 18-yard box. In almost a carbon copy of her first goal, Camara found the back of the net with a header to the left-hand corner. The two goals for Camara gives her a total of eleven on the season.
In the 39' minute, Widjeskog notched her first career collegiate goal.
Riley Barrett and
Alba Lorca ran a beautiful give and go play from the right edge of the Georgetown defensive box. The ball worked its way to Widjeskog who struck the ball past the netminder to give UC a 5-0 lead heading into halftime.
Just two minutes into the second half, Hammerstone was the recipient of a bad Tigers turnover. After the Georgetown goalkeeper fumbled a pass from her defender, Hammerstone picked up the ball and placed it into an open net. Following the goal, neither team could muster any offense for the remainder of the contest. UC hung on to take the game, 6-0.
The win gives Cumberlands an overall record of 13-1 on the season and a Mid-South Conference record of 9-1. With one conference game remaining on the schedule, the Patriots have already locked up a first-round bye in the MSC tournament.
Cumberlands will look to extend their win streak when they travel to Thomas More on Tuesday March 23, for a conference game against the Saints at 5 PM.
