Win Gives UC Their Best Regular Season Record in Program History

Crestview Hills, KY – In their final game of the season, UC scored their most goals in a game this year, notching seven. They defeated the Thomas More Saints 7-1 to improve to 14-1 on the year for their best regular season record in program history. The MSC win also gives them a 10-1 conference record for the 2020-21 season.

In the 90-minute contest the Patriots had 21 shots, 12 of which were on frame compared to just one shot from the Saints. Braces from Ainhoa Camara, Selena Barnett, and Jayden Boelter marks the most players with multiple goals this season.

Laura Navajas Marin was the main facilitator in the game, notching four assists, the most in her career and the most by any player this season.

The Patriots opened the scoring just five minutes into the contest. After building out of the back with short, quick passes Riley Barrett played a ball square to Navajas Marin in the center of the pitch. Navajas Marin went inline on the right side of the box sending a ball in, to find Camara on the near post who scored off her right leg.

Goal #2 came with less than three minutes left in the opening half. A turnover from the Saints gave Shara Randez the ball at midfield. She played a pass to Boelter who had her back towards goal, but was able to just tap the ball behind her to Camara who was running on. Camara took a few touches to draw the keeper out and then slotted the ball past her on the left side of goal or the 2-0 lead just before half.

In the 61' Cumberlands earned a corner kick on the left side of the field. Navajs Marin took the corner and sent the ball right in front of goal. Boelter was running into the box at full speed and headed it right past the keeper to give UC the 3-0 advantage.

The next two goals in the game for the Patriots would not come much later. At the 65th minute a one-two combination pass from Camara to Navajas Marin allowed Selena Barnett to run into the box unmarked. Navajas Marin played a through ball in that Barnett shot into the goal from her first touch. Then in the 68th minute Navajas Marin sent a ball from 30 yards into the UC defensive end up to Boelter. The freshman headed the ball to herself which brought out the Saints goalkeeper. Boelter took her shot from just inside the 18-yard box and hit the back of the next for the 5-0 lead.

Thomas More would get back a goal in the 70th minute from a penalty kick. UC then answered back with two more goals of their own in the final five minutes of play.  A ball sent up the field from Alanna Skinner in the 85th minute bounced to Sarah Hammerstone. She then sent the ball onto Barnett who put it into the goal for her second goal of the game. This marks the first time in her career that she scored multiple goals in a game.

The final goal of the game came off the foot of Alba Lorca in the final 12 seconds of the game. She faked out her defender with an unbelievable cutback that set up the ball on her left foot. She struck the ball into the far side of the net to finish off the Saints, 7-1.

The seven goals for the Patriots are the most they have scored since they defeated Cincinnati Christian 8-0 on September 1, 2018.

Cumberlands has locked in a first-round bye in the MSC Tournament. They will play in the quarterfinals on April 2nd in Columbia, KY. The time and opponent for that game will be announced at a later date on social media and the Cumberlands Patriots website.
