Williamsburg, KY – A strong second half wasn't enough as the (RV) UC men's lacrosse team fell to top-ranked Reinhardt 14-7 Sunday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. The Patriots move to 4-5 on the season and 3-2 in AAC play.
Christian Vanover led the Patriots with a goal and four assists, while
Thomas Fogarty,
Anthony Gray, and
Dawson Coltran finished with two points each.
Jake Morgan forced four caused turnovers and scooped five ground balls in the game.
Reinhardt, who has the top offense in the NAIA, struck early converted three of their first four shots into goals to take a 3-0 lead four minutes in. The Patriots responded midway through the opening quarter as
Dawson Coltran dodged and put a well-placed shot into the cage for a goal. UC looked to cut into the deficit, however, unforced turnovers coupled with an Eagles goal gave Reinhardt a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.
The Eagles added another goal a minute into the second quarter to extend their lead. A couple of minutes later,
Jake Morgan forced a turnover, which was scooped by
Schylar Chapman, and on the ensuing transition Vanover connected with Fogarty for a goal to make it 5-2. UC added a man-up goal from
Tanner Popovich, however Reinhardt tallied four unanswered goals to take 10-3 lead at the break.
Patriots made halftime adjustments to sure up their defense as
Michael Toohey made six of his game-high 11 saves in the third quarter. The freshman made five of those saves of the first seven minutes of the period to keep the score 10-3. After an Eagle goal, Vanover found Gray, who put a bounce shot just under the crossbar. Late in the period, UC took advantage of a Reinhardt penalty as Vanover scooped the rebound off a saved shot and put it home to cut the deficit to 11-5.
Cumberlands carried the momentum into the final quarter and struck first as Coltran added his second goal of the game. Gray also tallied his second multigoal game of the season with a goal at the 6:04 mark, however, Reinhardt netted three goals of their own for the 14-7 final.
Cumberlands will return to the field Friday, April 2, when they travel to Savannah, GA to face SCAD. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. with live stats available
