Trio of Home Runs Propels UC to Back-to-Back Run Rule Victories

Williamsburg, KY – The UC Patriots picked up their 11th and 12th straight home wins of the season run-ruling Brescia University twice in a doubleheader. The Patriots outscored the Bearcats 19-0 over the course of the two games tying the most they have scored in pair of games on the same day in 2021.

Cumberlands blasted a trio of home runs led by Tori Malone's grand slam in game one. Emily Bryant and Maddie Sickau hit their home runs in game two, both soaring shots over the left field fence. Sickau went 5-5 on the day, two of the them doubles and earning four RBI. Malone, Bryant, Katie Cheeseman and Hailey Wood all hit over .500 through the two games providing ten of the 17 RBI.

The two game shutouts came from the arms of Kaiti White, Paige Parker, and Abby Whelan. Combined they only gave up four hits while striking out ten batters and only issuing two walks.

CUMBERLANDS BLANKS BRESCIA, 11-0 (5 innings)
The Patriots wasted no time scoring their first run of game one. Bryant hit a double to left center that Sickau followed up with a double hit to the same spot giving UC the 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Sarah West sent a ball down the left field line to earn a double pushing Malone, who earned a walk to third base. Wood hit a blooper to shallow left center field that scored Malone. With runners on first and second, Cheeseman cleared the bases off a triple to center, the team's eighth of the season to put UC up, 4-0.

An inning later the lead would double off the bat of Malone. Sickau and Meryn Livingston had back-to-back singles followed by a walk to Madison Huber to load the bases. Down on a 0-1 count, Malone sent the ball over the left field wall for her first home run of the season and UC's first grand slam this year.

While the UC offense produced the eight runs, White kept the Bearcats off the scoreboard. She gave up just one hit through three innings, striking out three batters to bring her season total to 30, a team high. Parker came in to finish the job in the fourth inning where she fanned two batters, walking one and not surrendering a hit.

The Cumberlands offense kept rolling in the fourth from back-to-back singles off the bats of Bryant and Sickau. Huber brought Bryant home from an RBI double to right center field. She now has a team best seven doubles this season. Sickau and Huber would eventually score off an error, bringing the lead to 11-0. Parker struck out the final batter to seal the victory making it 11 straight wins for the Patriots.

CUMBERLANDS SHUTOUTS BRESCIA, 8-0 (5 innings)
To begin the game, Whelan struck out all three batters in the top of the first and the UC bats responded by scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Emily Jasper led the inning off with a walk and was moved to third base off a bunt single from Cheeseman. Bryant brought Jasper home from a fielder's choice where the defense tried to beat out the speed of Jasper, but were unsuccessful. For the second time today, Sickau hit a double with runners on to pick up two more RBI. Livingston scored Sickau with a single up the middle. The final run of the inning was scored off a bases loaded walk.

Bryant swung at the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the second inning sending a moon shot over the left field fence, her second of the season pushing the lead to 5-0. After not scoring in the third inning, Cheeseman reignited the offense with a single. In her first at-bat of the game Acacia Gray smoked a ball to deep left-center field scoring Cheeseman and picking up her first double of the year. Sickau had a hitter's count at 2-0 and took advantage of the situation, sending a high, soaring ball over the left field wall for a two-run home run. Kelsey DeZarn and Jenna Howell followed that up with back-to-back singles, their first hits of the season, but were stranded on base leaving the Patriots with an 8-0 lead.

Whelan closed out the game to earn the five-inning shutout, for her fourth win of the season. She had a season best five strikeouts while walking a single batter and giving up a trio of hits.

Cumberlands has now shutout seven teams on the year. Their 14-4 record is the program's best since the 2002 season, when that team started the year 15-3. Today, UC plated a run in seven of the eight innings they appeared in. Dating back to the second game of a doubleheader against Ohio Christian on Sunday, the Patriots scored in nine consecutive innings.

UC will continue their home stretch with four games slated against Cleary University from doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. Both days have games starting at 12 and 2 pm with lives stats available here and the live video will be on the UC Sports Network here.
