Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Tommy Chasanoff

Strong Defensive Effort Not Enough as Patriots Fall

Williamsburg, KYJake Morgan and Stephen Popovich combined for nine caused turnovers and 13 ground balls, however, it wasn't enough as the sixth-ranked UC men's lacrosse team fell to (RV) Siena Heights 11-5 Saturday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  It was UC's second straight game against a team mention in the NAIA Top 10 Poll as the Patriots move to 2-3 on the season.

The Patriots looked strong in the early going dominating time of possession and outshooting the Saints (1-0) 13-3 in the first quarter, however, Siena Heights' Vinnie Jean made six saves.  UC was unable to convert on their first four man-up opportunities of the quarter, however, late in the first quarter Thomas Fogarty scooped the rebound, off of a Dawson Coltran shot, into the back of the cage to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.  Siena Heights evened the score, before UC took advantage of a Saints penalty as Dylan Crouch connected with Anthony Gray for a man-up goal to make it 2-1 after the first quarter.

Siena Heights outscored UC 6-1 over the course of the second and third quarters to take and 8-3 lead into the final period.  The Patriots lone goal over that stretch came from Fogarty, who notched his third multi-goal game of the season.

Both teams struggled to get their offense going in the fourth quarter as the teams were scoreless over the first six minutes.  Siena Heights added consecutive goals to extend their lead to 10-3 with 7:40 remaining.  Cumberlands looked to rally as Christian Vanover wrapped around the cage and put a well-placed shot into the back of the net to cut the deficit to 9-4.  Two minutes later, Crouch scooped the ground ball, off a rebound shot, and fired it home to make it 9-5 with 4:25 left.  That was the closest UC came as Siena Heights added a pair of goals in the final minute for the 11-5 final.

Fogarty and Crouch finished with two points each, while Jayvon Jamison went 8-13 on faceoffs with three ground balls.  Connor Owens made seven saves and scooped four ground balls in 36 minutes of work.

Cumberlands will return to the field Saturday, March 13, when they host (RV) Lourdes. The game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. with live video available here and live stats available here.
